Giles, Blacksburg Win Golf Titles


Blacksburg's Jake Mondy took medalist honors with an even-par 70 as he helped lead the Bruins to their third-staight regional title.

Giles, Galax, Blacksburg, Cave Spring and Lord Botetourt will all advance to next week's VHSL State Golf Tournament after qualifying this past week in regional action across the area.

Giles Wins Region C Title, Galax Finishes Second

DRAPER, VA - Giles had all four of its players shoot in the 70s, as they claimed the Region C golf title Tuesday at the Par 72 Draper Valley Golf Course. Galax edged Radford by two strokes to claim the second spot in next week's Group A state tournament.

Both Giles, who scored a 304, and Galax, who posted a 313, will advance to the Group A state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at the Clearbrook Golf Course in Bristol. Individuals from this area, who also qualified, include James Wood (71, Radford), Zeke Shaffer (73, Radford) and Scott Obenshain (75, Glenvar)

While the Spartans had the top spot wrapped up, the real battle of the day came down between Galax and Radford, for the second spot and a trip to the states. The Maroon Tide came out on top in the end, edging the Bobcats by two strokes 313-315.

Radford's James Woods took medalist honors when he carded a 71.

Tanner Carbaugh led Giles with a 75, followed by Caleb Tilley (75), Trevor Myers (76) and Michael Carbaugh finished with a 78.

Galax was led by Brock Cox's 75. Kyle Schaefer (78), Dustin Thompson (79) and Eddie Hanks (81).

Radford, who played in the state tournament last year, finished third in the regionals. Woods led the Bobcats with a 71, followed by Shaffer (72), Jake Geisen (83) and Tyler Wood (88).

Grayson County finished fourth with a team score of 328, followed by Parry McCluer (335), Chilhowie (335), George Wythe (343) and James River (347).

Blacksburg Claims Region IV Crown, Cave Spring Comes Home In Second

BLUEFIELD, VA - Blacksburg, the defending Group AA state champions, will be looking to claim a third-straight state title next week, after they earned their third-straight regional title Monday at the Par 70 Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield. Cave Spring, who finished a distant second, will also be making its second-straight appearance in the state tournament.

The Bruins, who finished with a team score of 289, and the Knights, who carded a team score of 312, will both compete in the Group AA championships next Monday and Tuesday at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet. Salem's Parker Davis, who shot a 73 on Monday, also qualified for the states in individual play.

Blacksburg's Jake Mondy, who took medalist honors at last week's River Ridge District Tournament, also claimed the same honor on Monday after firing an even-par 70.

All six Bruins shot in the 70s, even though just the first four count toward the team score. Mondy led the way with a 70, followed by Brian Langley (72), George Perkovich (73), Michael Bekken (74), Stephen Duetsch (77) and Courtney Ellenbogen (79).

Jack Wilkes led the Knights with a 71, followed by Matt Harman (77), Eric Hart (82), James Kasza (82), Chris Bennitt (86) and Michael Phlegar (86).

Graham finished third with a team score of 318, followed by Abingdon (323), Bassett (325) and Magna Vista (334).

Jefferson Forest Wins Region III Title, Lord Botetourt Finishes Second

HARRISONBURG, VA - In a three-way battle for the title, Jefferson Forest eventually came away the champion with a team score of 308, while Lord Botetourt was one stroke better than fellow Blur Ridge District member Wm. Byrd, 315-316 to claim the second spot in the Region III tournament played Monday at the Par 72 Heritage Oaks Golf Course.

Both Jefferson Forest and Lord Botetourt, along with individual player Joshia Branham (72, Northside) will advance to the Group AA state tournament, which will be played next Monday and Tuesday at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet.

Tyler Hunt of Amherst took medalist honors with a 68.

Hunter Foley led Lord Botetourt with a 76, followed by Kevin Foster (79), Trent Mathias (79) and Clay O'Conner (81).

Wm. Byrd finished third with a team score of 316, followed by Spotswood (319), Robert E. Lee (321), Turner Ashby (323), Rustburg (331) and Fort Defiance (343).
