CENTREVILLE, VA - Senior night was not supposed to go down like this for the Centreville Wildcats. Despite having a 1-5 record, the Wildcats were improving each week; losing a heartbreaker to the Robinson Rams in the final minutes last Friday night.
For the Cougars, this game had all the makings of the so-called "Trap Game." Oakton is undefeated this season and survived a close game last week against the Chantilly Chargers, winning 17-15 after leading 17-0 in the first half.
In the end, it was Oakton living up to their record as they walked away their seventh win on the year in a 47-14 win.
Getting things started was the Cougar's defense, who jumped on the scoreboard first after defensive back Joey Kopfman intercepted a pass from Wildcats' quarterback Cam Walter and returned it for a touchdown. With Oakton leading 6-0, the Centreville special teams came through by tipping the attempted extra point by Ray Goins.
Oakton's offense didn't hesitate one bit to score again, as they found the endzone on a four play drive, which was capped off by a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Just like that, two possessions in, the #5 Cougars found themselves up with a sizeable 14-0 lead.
Centreville appeared to have caught a break after pinning the Cougars down at their own four yard line. Yet the Wildcats gave up a 96-yard drive, ending with a 27-yard rushing touchdown from Jonathan Meadows.
Up 21-0, the scoring didn't stop there for the Cougars in the first half. Quarterback Ryan Harris led the Cougars with a perfect two-minute drill, throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jay Young and Oakton had a halftime lead of 26-0.
The second half of the game was not any better for the Wildcats. Despite the efforts of Centreville running back Justin Conway, the Oakton defense had risen to the occasion to effectively stop the Wildcat offense throughout the game.
The Cougar's special teams would then start getting in the mix as Jack Tyler blocked a punt that was recovered by Kenny Hanson for a touchdown and a 33-0 lead.
Yet Oakton didn't stop there. Scoring on two more possessions, they had opened up a quite a big lead at 47-0.
The Wildcats would keep clawing away as they scored on back-to-back drives, but it wasn't enough as Oakton would ultimately walk away with a 47-14 win and moved to a perfect 7-0 on the season. Next week, they face the Robinson Rams, while the Wildcats face Mount Vernon.
