CHRISTIANSBURG, VA - It was the last time these two teams will meet in the foreseeable future and like the past games, this one was another classic, as Christiansburg took an early lead and then had to hold a second half Radford rally to claim a 20-13 non-district win Friday night. The Blue Demon victory marked the sixth-straight against the Bobcats.
Christiansburg (4-1) took a 7-0 lead on its first possession of the game. On a third-and-11 play, Greg Lee broke around the left corner after appearing to be stopped and galloped 71 yards for the score. Brad Cox's PAT would give the Blue Demons the lead with 10:33 left in the opening quarter.
The Blue Demons would tack on another score late in the first quarter. Facing a fourth-and-12 from the Bobcats 32-yard line, Christiansburg went for it and gained 16-yards on the play to pick up a first-and-10 at the Cats 16-yard line. The Blue Demons would cap off the drive when Keith Johnson bullied his way from a yard out. Cox's PAT would make it 14-0 with 4:48 left in the quarter
After a series of interceptions by both teams, Christiansburg would up its lead to 17-0 on 27-yard field goal by Cox with three seconds left in the second quarter.
Radford (4-1) would finally get on the scoreboard with 9:14 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard scramble by Dontae Carter. Michael Goodman's PAT would make it 17-7, Blue Demons.
Christiansburg would use a Cox 28-yard field goal to up its lead to 20-7 with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter.
Radford would once again cut into the Christiansburg lead, as Jon Thompson hauled in a 30-yard pass from Carter. The two-point conversion failed, thus making it 20-13 with 6:19 left in the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats would have one final chance to score with under two minutes left in the game. However, the drive stalled, as the Blue Demons were able to hold on for the 20-13 victory.
Radford tallied 214 yards of offense, with 128 of those yards coming via airmail. Carter completed 14-of-35 passes and was intercepted three times. Dre Thompson led the Bobcat ground game with 76 yards on 11 carries.
Christiansburg racked up 354 yards of total offense on the evening, with 217 of those yards coming on the ground. Greg Lee led the rushing attack with 108 yards on 10 carries and Keith Johnson had 62 yards on 18 carries. Steven Wills completed 9-of-17 passes for 137 yards and was picked off twice.
