STEPHENS CITY, VA - The Sherando Warriors (4-1; 2-1) entered Saturday's game against the Central Falcons (1-5; 0-3) needing to get back on track with a win after last week's loss to Handley. It was the first time in 29 regular season contests that the Warriors were coming off a loss to start a game. Central came into the game just wanting to compete and continue to move the program in the right direction for 2nd year head coach Mike Yew.
Sherando wasted no time getting on the board in the game. After the Warriors forced a 3 and out against the Falcons, it took only 3 minutes for Ross Metheny to find Dalton Boyd in the end zone for the 1st score of the game. Metheny was 5 for 6 on the drive totaling 51 yards through the air. The Metheny to Boyd connection would prove deadly for the Falcons as the game wore on. Another 3 and out for the Falcons set up another score for Sherando. On the 5th play of the drive Metheny would again find Boyd, this time for a 25 yard score and a 14-0 Warriors lead.
Down by 14 and facing an uphill climb the Falcons took the challenge and marched 77 yards on their next possession to get to within 7 points. The drive consisted of 13 plays and took 5:23 off the clock. Sophomore quarterback Matt Sherfey completed 4 of 7 passes for 42 yards, including the touchdown pass to JJ Armentrout from 9 yards away. The teams traded possessions and the next big play of the half was a fumble recovery by the Warriors Conor Recko to setup another Sherando drive from inside Central territory. Metheny and the Warriors could not capitalize when Metheny was picked off in the end zone by Central's Tevin Montgomery. Sherfey would lead the Falcons down the field and into Warriors territory when he was picked off by Dimitri Luck to end the half with the Warriors up 14-7.
A lackluster first half performance by the Warriors would prove to be bad news for the Falcons. Sherando came out of the locker room fired up in the 3rd quarter, scoring 3 touchdowns to put the game out of reach for Central. The first score came when Kadeem Blackwood fielded a JJ Armentrout punt on the Falcons 41 yard line and returned it all the way back for the Warriors to make the score 21-7 with 6:41 to go in the quarter. Nick Merchant and Roger Smith Jr. added rushing touchdowns before the end of the quarter to make the score 35-7 after 3 quarters of play. Dimitri Luck added another interception for the Warriors in the 3rd quarter as well.
The 4th quarter of the game was all but a formality, with the Warriors scoring two more touchdowns to put the final score at 47-7 in favor of Sherando. Roger Smith Jr. scored his 2nd rushing touchdown of the game from 6 yards out, and Boyd added his 3rd score of the game when Metheny threw a perfect pass over his right shoulder from 41 yards away as the Warriors rolled to the victory.
Metheny finished the game with 241 yards passing, 12 yards rushing, 3 touchdown passes, and an interception. Boyd finished with 6 receptions for 123 yards and 3 scores. Roger Smith Jr. would end up with only 12 carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively for the Warriors it was Nick Merchant leading the way with 15 tackles. Ryan Witt would add 10 tackles and sack for the Warriors defense that limited the Falcons to just 171 yards of offense, including (-10) rushing. Central was led by Matt Sherfey who tallied 171 yards through the air with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Armentrout led the Falcons with 5 catches for 77 yards and a score.
Sherando will play at Skyline next Friday night at 7:30PM. The Hawks fell last night to the Handley Judges and next week's game will be crucial for both squads. Central will play Handley at home next Friday at 7:30PM. The Sherando and Skyline will be broadcast live at www.GamedayMagazine.com with live coverage starting at 7:00PM.
Velocity Sports Performance Players of the Game
Sherando: Dalton Boyd, Wide Receiver
Boyd had a breakout game Saturday totaling 6 catches for 123 yards and 3 scores. Boyd is starting to show himself as a viable second option for Ross Metheny to look at. Boyd was able to consistently get behind the Central defense and cause problems all day from the slot receiver position.
Central: Matt Sherfey, Quarterback
Only a sophomore Sherfey started to grow up Saturday against a very good Warriors defense. Sherfey completed almost 50 percent of his passes, including 7 to JJ Armentrout. Sherfey was able to escape the Sherando pressure on more than one occasion and with more experience he will become one of the better quarterbacks in the Winchester area.
