CHRISTIANSBURG, VA - On a rainy and sloppy Senior night, Christiansburg grounded out 275 yards in the muddy trenches to break its two-game losing streak and thrash Cave Spring 38-6 in a River Ridge District encounter Friday night.
After neither team were able to move the ball on their first possession, the Blue Demons (5-3, 1-2 RRD) would take advantage of good field position, starting their second drive at the Cave Spring 43-yard line. Several plays later sophomore quarterback Steven Wills called his own number and bullied his way in from a yard out. On the PAT, the ball was mishandled by the holder, senior punter Brad Cox would then pick up the loose pigskin and drop-kicked it through the uprights to make it 7-0 with 3:26 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Knights (2-6, 0-3 RRD) would answer back early in the second quarter. An 11-play drive was capped off when Michael Cole scored from 3-yards out. The PAT failed, thus making it 7-6 with 10:00 showing on the clock.
Christiansburg would up its advantage to 10-6 when Cox's 42-yard field goal in the rain and wind hit the uprights and fell through with 7:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Being contained for the first part of the game, senior Keith Johnson finally broke loose, as he sliced and diced his way through the Knights defense for a 72-yard touchdown. Cox's PAT would give Christiansburg a 17-6 lead with 2:07 left in the third quarter.
The Blue Demons continued to dominate in the fourth quarter under the steady rain.
With 9:07 left in the fourth quarter, junior Zach Weller scrambled his way in to the end zone from 10 yards out. Cox's PAT would give the Blue Demons a 24-6 advantage.
Less than three minutes later, Christiansburg was lighting up the scoreboard again. This time Greg Lee would get in the scoring act, as the sophomore scored from 2-yards out. Cox's PAT gave the home team a 31-6 lead with 6:05 showing in the final quarter.
With the Blue Demons playing some of its younger players by now, sophomore Drew Bibb would take full advantage of his playing time, as the young man galloped 24-yards for his first touchdown and Cox's PAT would make it 38-6 with 1:53 left in the game.
Defensively, Christiansburg forced five turnovers, four of those were interceptions. Junior D.J. Palmer picked off two of those passes from his defensive back position.
For the game, five different Blue Demons scored touchdowns.
Christiansburg, who tallied 275 yards of total offense, all on the ground, was led by Keith Johnson's 196 yards on 15 carries, including a touchdown.
Cave Spring had 265 yards of total offense. Quarterback Josh Woodrum led the air attack completing 13-of-28 passes for 208 yards and he was intercepted four times.
