FAIRFAX, VA -- West Springfield rolled into Robinson Secondary School Friday night in a precarious situation...needing a victory to right the Spartan ship, after falling to 0-2 to start the season...and needing to do so on the road. Robinson, coming off a lopsided loss to Stone Bridge the week before, also found themselves in need of a home victory, in order to regain the swagger that has been a part of their football history for years. If it's possible for 2 teams to find themselves in a Do-Or-Die situation, this early in the season, Friday night was certainly it.
After 2 games, Spartan QB, Bryn Renner, has already established himself as the top passer in the Northern Region, coming into the night with a Passing Rating of 83.3, amassing 678 yards, on 50 of 79 passing, and 6 touchdowns. But it has been the defense for West Springfield that has been suspect so far this season. That defense would be tested again, as the Robinson running game was in high gear, behind Wynton Fox, who rushed for 119 yards, and 1 touchdown. But the Spartans never broke, and behind Air Renner, the Spartans came away with the 50-27 victory.
West Springfield got on the board 1st, mid-way through the 1st quarter. Going strictly with a No-Huddle offense, Renner combined quick, mid-range passing, with some nifty running of his own, capped by his 15 yard scoring scamper. But the Rams answered right back when, after an 8 play drive, Sr. QB Timmy Meier hit WR Xavier Duncan on an 18 yard scoring strike. The quarter ended 7-7.
The 2nd quarter was yet another see-saw battle. The Spartans struck first, again, on a Dan Collins 13 yard run. But 2 minutes later, and on a 3rd down play deep in their own territory, Wynton Fox broke a couple tackles at the line of scrimmage, broke to the outside, and raced 70 yards for the touchdown.
The rest of the half was all West Springfield, however. On their next possession, and after another sustained drive, Collins broke free again, and ran it in the end zone from 18 yards out to put the Spartans back on top, 21-14. Then, late in the quarter, the defense would add to the scoreboard. LB Scott Van Buren snagged a Meier pass out of mid-air, and raced 30 yards for another touchdown. The score at the half; West Springfield 28, Robinson 14.
The 3rd quarter mirrored the 1st 2, with each team trading touchdowns. The Spartans, again, scored first when Renner hit Tucker Tobin for a 20 yard strike. After a 52 yard kick-off return by senior C.J. Nee, RB Alex Murray plowed his way into the end zone from a yard out, after a 5 play drive. The PAT failed, and the score now read 35-20 in favor of the visitors. Renner capped the scoring in the 3rd on a 15 yard run, and West Springfield now were in command, 43-20.
Each team scored in the 4th, and again it was the Spartans that did so first. Senior Andy Stallings, who had been fairly quiet all night, hauled in a 10 yard pass from Renner, and did the rest on his own, scampering 38 yards after the catch, for the final Spartan score of the night. The Rams didn't die hard, though, as they had one more scoring push as time was running out, with QB Timmy Meier punching the ball into the end zone from the Spartan 15. The Final score: West Springfield 50, Robinson 27.
The Spartans get in the win column for the 1st time this season, and both teams now sit at 1-2. Both teams are at home next week, as West Springfield hosts Hayfield, and it's Homecoming for the Rams, and they will host Annacostia (DC).
