INWOOD, WV - The Sherando Warriors took care of business and answered some questions on Friday night with a convincing 37-10 victory to kick off the 2008 season. Bill Hall's Warriors lost big names on both sides of the ball from last year's state runner-up team. Who would replace Markeith Brisco? What about Derek Crosen, Bryan Barlow, and Joey Christine? Well on a humid night in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, all of those questions were answered.

Roger Smith Jr. picked right up where Markeith Brisco left off in 2007 by leading the Warriors ground attack all night long. Smith scored twice and ran for over 200 yards on his first night as Sherando's featured back. Smith displayed the ability to be the feature back last season in limited time, but after his breakout game tonight, the rest of the Northwestern District needs to take notice of this stud running back.

Senior WR Derrick Dehaney was the number two option last season for Ross Metheny and showed tonight that he is more than capable of being the go-to guy for the Warriors' passing attack. Dehaney scored the first touchdown of the season from 17 yards out on the team's first drive. Dehaney has added a few inches to his frame and looks poised for a breakout year.

Ryan Witt, a standout linebacker on last year's State Runner-Up team, has stepped in as the starting tight end and got his first touchdown of the season tonight in the second half. Metheny connected with Witt in the second half on a 5 yard touchdown pass.

Lucas Stump stepped up on the defensive line and played well throughout the night. Stump recovered an Applemen fumble on the Musselman 32 yard line to set up Metheny's 3rd touchdown pass of the night.

Metheny showed great poise on his final touchdown of the night, waiting until the last possible moment to throw the ball. Senior Jason Tunison hauled in the 32 yard bomb to push the lead to 30-3.

Musselman Korey Jackson, only a sophomore, showed promise all night long as a duel threat/do it all quarterback and scored the lone touchdown with a 26 yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter.

Sherando returns to Stephen's City next Friday night, as they host Hedgesville at Arrowhead field. Make sure you tune in at 7:15 for exclusive coverage of Warrior football here on the Gameday Radio Network.
