SALEM, VA - Salem stopped a two-point conversion play by Northside that would have tied the game in the third quarter to escape with an exciting 14-12 non-district football win at Willis White Field Friday night.

Trailing 14-6, Dustin Phelps would haul in a 25-yard pass from Ryan Keith to pull the Vikings (2-3) to within two, 14-12, with 1:56 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing two-point conversion play, Salem's Ryan Dowe would tackle quarterback Ryan Keith in the backfield to spoil what would have been the tying score.

Salem had taken a 14-6 lead earlier in the third quarter when Kirk Coles scampered 7-yards and Powell made the PAT.

Northside took an early 6-0 lead when Phelps galloped 33-yards for the touchdown. The PAT was blocked, thus making it 6-0 with 2:56 left in the opening quarter.

Salem would take a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter when Coles scrambled 3-yards for the score and Robert Powell made the PAT.

The Spartans had a chance to score right before the half, but Powell's 21- yard field goal fell short with 39 ticks remaining.
