RADFORD, VA - Radford set the tone for this one on the first play of the game and the rout was on, as the Bobcats cruised to an easy 42-0 non-district football win against Grayson County Friday evening.
On the first play from the line of scrimmage, Radford sophomore quarterback Dontae Carter called his own number and galloped 66 yards for the score. Michael Goodman's PAT would make it 7-0, just 20 seconds into the game.
"That play set the tone for this one," said Radford Head Coach Matthew Saunders. I knew that Dontae could get some yardage out of the play we called, but I never thought he would run for the touchdown."
On the ensuing kickoff, the Bobcats (3-0) elected to go for the onsides kick and would recover the kick at the 42-yard line. However, the drive eventually stalled.
Radford, thanks to back-to-back unsportsmanlike calls against the Grayson County (0-3) coaching staff would give Radford the ball deep in the Blue Devils territory late in the opening quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Radford's Patrick Webb bullied his way in from a yard out and Goodman's PAT gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead with 11:51 on the clock.
Radford continued to have its way with Blue Devils throughout the second quarter. In a matter of a three-minute span, the Bobcats would strike gold twice. With 4:15 left in the quarter, William Saunders hauled in an 11-yard pass from Carter and Goodman's PAT made it 21-0. But, the Cats weren't done yet, a perfectly played out flee-flicker, Patrick Webb would be the recipient of a 21-yard pass from Carter. Goodman would once again send it thru the uprights to make it 28-0 with 1:14 left before the half.
Things continued to go the Bobcats way in the third quarter. Radford would block a Grayson County punt and recover the ball at the 27-yard line. However, the drive would end when Goodman's attempt of a 47-yard field goal fell just short.
With the help of several penalties against the Blue Devils, the Bobcats would strike again, this time Carter would scamper 9-yards and Goodman's PAT would make it 35-0 with 16 ticks left in the quarter and the running clock was now in force.
With Radford skunking Grayson County, the fowl smell of a skunk actually started to make its way across the Norman G. Lineburg Field in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats didn't seem to be bothered by the smell, as they would score once again, this time Webb scored on an 18-yard run and Goodman's sixth extra point of the evening would make it 42-0 with 8:03 left in the game.
Grayson County appeared they might avoid the shutout late in the quarter. However, the drive eventually ended, as the clock would run out and the Bobcats would prevail with the skunk, 42-0.
Grayson County finished the game with 146 yards of total offense, after having only 48 yards in the first half. Omar Laretta led the Blue Devils with 52 yards on 11 carries.
"Coach Chris Vickers had a great game plan for us defensively tonight and it showed," said coach Saunders.
Radford racked up 302 yards of total offense, with 144 of those coming via airmail.
Dontae Carter led the Bobcats with 214 yards. The versatile quarterback rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for 144 yards on a 7-for-13 night, including two touchdown passes. Patrick Webb tallied 39 yards rushing, including three touchdowns.
