Gameday Notebook - P.W.C. (2nd Ed)

NOKESVILLE, VA - Nearly every young man that plays football in Prince William County was on the good or bad side of a lopsided game last Friday night. Battlefield, Osbourn and Woodbridge put up big numbers while Brentsville, Gar-Field and Hylton took one on the chin.

I've added a new section to the PWC notebook, hopefully you will like it! Let's take a look around the county!

BOBCATS BEAT UP ON INDIANS

The 'PWC Notebook Game to Watch' lived up to the hype for the first three quarters Friday night in Woodbridge as Battlefield was up only 7-0 going into the fourth quarter. The Bobcats exploded for 28 points in the 4th quarter and held onto the shutout 35-0 as the Bobcat D not allow Gar-Field past the 50 the entire game

This non-district match-up featured two of the top running backs in Northern Virginia in Battlefield's Adrian Ingram and Gar-Field's Bryce Miller. Ingram got the best of this one as he ran for 200 yards on 23 carries and had a 55 yard touchdown run. Bryce Miller on the other hand was limited to just 33 yards on 17 carries.

ROCKET POWER!!!

Rocket Williams ran for five scores on 21 carries and had two touchdowns called back. Williams finished with 177 yards rushing in the game and is arguably the best running back the county has ever seen.

The Viking D looked solid for the third straight week as they held Loudoun Valley to just 41 yards and had three interceptions en route to the 48-0 blowout. The Vikings have only allowed 6 points so far this season and are beginning to look like one of the better units in the area.

Coach Keith King needs his team to eliminate mental mistakes if they truly want to make a run at a state title. Woodbridge was called for 16 penalties that resulted to 145 yards.

EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT

The Osbourn Eagles got their first win of the year in a Cedar Run District match-up against Culpepper by the wide margin of 61-14. The Eagles' Jerrell McFadden was ultra productive by rushing for 129 yards on only 5 carries two of which went for touchdowns.

Quarterback Thomas Keith also had a big night running for two touchdowns and passing for another to Vidal Greene from 43 yards out. Osbourn has a big test coming up this Friday night, read more about it later on in the notebook.

PANTHERS WIN A CLOSE ONE

Potomac kicker Anthony Edwards was roughed on a 36 yard attempt with 1:02 to go in the fourth quarter and was unable to attempt the game winner. With only 3 seconds to go in the game backup kicker Jerry Seybold lined up for a 21 yard attempt to win the game for Potomac. As the kick sailed through the uprights Seybold hit the turf in pain as a host of Osbourn Park defenders ran into him subsequently breaking his femur.

Potomac's 3-0 victory in this important AAA non-district match-up improved their record to 2-1 on the season. Freshman RB Matthew Thomas had another nice game as he carried the ball 20 times for 92 yards.

Yellow Jacket sophomore QB Dominique Terrell had another solid outing as he accounted for 137 total yards of offense as he passed for 74 and ran for 63.

BRUINS FIGHT THROUGH NUMEROUS MISTAKES

Usually when your team is called for 18 penalties for 150 yards you lose. Forest Park was able to work past the errors and upended Stonewall Jackson 28-10 in this non-district meeting. The Bruin D played well for the second consecutive week by holding the Raiders to just 103 total yards.

Forest Park's Tunde Bakare made the most of his carries Friday night as he ran for 100 yards on 8 carries. Two of those carries went for scores of 76 and 3 yards respectively. QB Bruce Facundas had another good game as he went 14 of 26 for 126 yards. Facundas also ran for a 2 yard score in the second quarter to put the Bruins up 14-0 at halftime.

Stonewall was missing their premier player for the second straight week as Damien Thigpen is still nursing his ankle. As I stated in last week's notebook, Coach Dougherty has to have a healthy Thigpen if this team is going to have any success this year. If you followed Stonewall last season Ryan Williams and Thigpen missed the majority of the season with injuries derailing what was supposed to be a special season for the Raiders. I'm hoping Thigpen can get back on the field soon.

PWC NOTEBOOK GAME TO WATCH

#2 Woodbridge (3-0) at Osbourn (1-1)

Over the last four meetings between these two the home team has won each game: Woodbridge won 6-3 last year; Osbourn won in '06, 21-17; Woodbridge won 31-6 in '05; and Osbourn won in '04, 28-7. So if this pattern continues you could have a potential upset brewing in Manassas Friday night.

Osbourn is only two years removed from winning the Division 6 AAA Championship and experienced a rebuilding year in '07 after losing the majority of their team to graduation. Coach Steve Schultze has rebuilt his team and hopes to contend for the Cedar Run District title this season.

Viking Rocket Williams gets all the hype but his linemen deserve some credit too. Woodbridge may have the best set of offensive tackles in the state in seniors Austin Brown and Jay Weatherington. Brown was the anchor last season at left tackle and Weatherington has made the switch from tight end to right tackle. Weatherington has brought quickness and athleticism to the line and is getting serious looks from school like Boston College and Navy.

The key to this match-up is going to be the Eagle defense against the Viking offense. Senior nose guard Tyler Brown has to have a huge game up front to slow down Williams and Viking attack. If Jerrell McFadden can match Williams you just might have the key ingredients for the biggest upset of the year.

I'm betting on the streak ending in a close one.
