Baker's 2TD's Lead Panthers To 31-14 Win
POTOMAC FALLS, VA - The Potomac Falls Panthers are waiving their hands in the air as if to say, you better pay attention. In Friday's game against Jefferson, the Panthers were under the microscope to say the least, and they delivered in a big way, beating the Jefferson Cougars 31-14.
Potomac Falls, led by tailback Michael Baker, who finished the night with 158 yards on 17 carries, was too much to handle for the Cougars. The Panther offensive line blasted holes that a truck could idle through, and the rest was history.
Potomac Falls hit the scoreboard first with an Asa Fox field goal after its offense started its first possession on the Jefferson 25 yard line. That trend continued for most of the game as the Panthers played with a short field most of the night. Quarterback Greg Woodlief then added a 30 yard touchdown run on the next drive to make the score 10-0 after Fox's extra point.
Potomac Falls senior Michael Baker then scored late in the 1st quarter from 5 yards out, and then again from 15 yards out before the end of the half to give the Panthers a 24-0 lead going into the locker room.
The Jefferson Cougars started the second half by driving down the field and then scoring behind a tremendous run by quarterback Brandon Hyler from 43 yards out. The Cougars missed the 2-point conversion and trailed 24-6.
In what may have been the most important play of the night for the Cougars, the Panthers fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but after the pile was cleared, Potomac Falls still had the football.
Potomac Falls quickly marched down the field and then added more to their lead when receiver Chad McMichael snagged a pass from Woodlief on a broken play. After the extra point, the Panthers led 31-6.
Jefferson added a late touchdown on a 23 yard catch and run by receiver Chris Johnson, but the Cougars never threatened the Panther lead, and Potomac Falls ran away with a 31-14 win.
Potomac Falls improved to 3-0 on the season and will have a bye next week before returning to play on September 26th against the Heritage Pride. Jefferson fell to 1-2 with the loss and will tee it up again next week when they face Urbana High School on the road.
