FAIRFAX, VA- The Oakton Cougars and the Fairfax Rebels renewed their rivalry on a cool Friday night at Harold Stalnaker stadium. These Concorde District foes were victorious last week and confident entering the game. The Cougars stumbled out of the gate against T.C. Williams last week, but eventually took the game over and won 39-23. The Rebels were equally impressive as they handily defeated Washington & Lee 35-8.
The start of the game was all Fairfax with their defense holding on the first possession and the offense scoring on a 71-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Abdullah Amin to senior running back Chris Regensberg. With the Rebels leading 7-0 at the start of the second quarter the Cougars answered with a steady mix of run and pass, ending with the elusive senior running back Trey Watts rushing for a seven-yard touchdown. With the momentum on the side of the Cougars they struck again with senior captain Ryan Harris, rotating in at quarterback with senior Chris Coyer, rushing in for a five-yard touchdown.
Fairfax could never get back into the game after taking the early lead. Oakton scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter making it 28 unanswered points. The third touchdown came from a Harris pass to Watts from the Rebels 32 yard line. The last touchdown of the half was the backbreaker. With 1:01 left on the clock the Cougars marched down the field and scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown from Coyer with :37 seconds still remaining on the clock. Oakton led at halftime 28-7.
The Rebels received the ball at the start of the third quarter with their drive stalling at midfield while eroding seven valuable minutes off the clock. The Cougars made them pay with a two-yard rushing touchdown from senior Jonathan Meadows that was set up by a deep pass to Watts. The Cougars' defense was as impressive as the offense with seniors Joey McCallum and Jack Tyler setting the tone. Junior place-kicker, Ray Goins, capped off the night with a 26-yard field goal with 4:05 left in the 4th quarter. Oakton scored 38 unanswered points with a balanced attack on offense and defense to move to a 2-0-district record.
