WINCHERSTER, VA -- What was billed going into Friday night as an exciting, hard fought, Northwestern District match-up between 2 2007 play-off teams, turned out to be anything but, when the whistle sounded to start play at James Wood High School. That is if you are simply a true fan of high school football, and not a partisan of either team...
The James Wood Colonels and the Millbrook Pioneers, both coming off play-off seasons, and with identical 2-1 records, squared off Friday in the 1st round of Northwestern District action. From the start, it was a penalty-laden contest, as Millbrook (13 penalties in the game) didn't get an opening play off until after their 3rd consecutive infraction, which pinned them on their own 2-yard line. This spelled disaster moments later. On the next (1st) play, Pioneer RB Allen Silver took the hand-off on a sweep, and a blitzing Brock Lockhart corralled Silver in the end zone for a safety, and the Colonels were up 2-0 right from the start.
From this point the game got defensive, as both teams clamped down. Yards were hard to come by for both teams, as the opposing defenses employed a good combination of timely blitzing and gang tackling to keep the other at bay. It wasn't until mid-way into the 2nd quarter that offensive points finally made it on the board. Starting from the Millbrook 30 yard line, James Wood capped a 7-play drive with Lockhart plowing through would-be tacklers, and 7 yards later, falling into the end zone. After the extra point, the Colonels took their 9-0 lead into the locker room for the break.
The 3rd quarter found a little different Millbrook team take the field. Gone were the penalties that killed 3 drives in the 1st half, and the offense started to click. They finally got on the board late in the stanza, on a well executed 13 play, 63 yard drive, which saw 3 4th and long conversions. RB Rylan Banks iced the drive on a nifty 6 yard run for a touchdown, and the Pioneers were back in the hunt, 9-6, after the missed extra point.
But that was all the scoring the Pioneers would muster on the night, as the James Wood defense would bend, but never broke. The Colonels added insurance in the 4th quarter on a 2 yard QB sneak by senior Trae Tinsman, and this game was all but a bad memory for Pioneer fans. The final would stay James Wood 16, and Millbrook 6.
James Wood now takes their 3-1\1-0 record to Woodstock to play Central on Friday night. Game time is set for 7:30pm. Millbrook gets a chance to regroup at home on Friday, as they take on the surprising 4-0 Skyline Hawks. Kick-off is slated for 7:00pm
VELOCITY SPORTS PERFORMANCE PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Brock Lockhart - Junior FB\LB, James Wood
The numbers weren't impressive for the fullback, but his carries were huge to keep drives going (22 carries, 77 yards). He accounted for half of the Colonels points on the night, scoring the 1st touchdown of the game, and recording the safety to start the scoring in the beginning of the game. Lockhart also accounted for 12 tackles (6 solo, 9 assists, 6 1st hits).
Calvin Rodney - RB\LB, Millbrook Pioneers
Rodney found the road tough going most of the night. He carried the ball 24 times for 70 yards, but it was his bruising runs off left tackle that kept Millbrook's lone touchdown drive alive. In that drive, Rodney averaged 4.1 yards per carry.
