Salem started a new win streak, while Blacksburg, Pulaski County, William Fleming, Floyd County and Glenvar remained perfect, as the fourth week of high school football action in the Roanoke Valley and NRV is now history.

Bassett Holds On Against Hidden Valley
ROANOKE, VA - In a defensive struggle, Basset came away with a hard-fought 10-7 non-district football win against Hidden Valley Friday night.

The Bengals (3-0) took a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Emanuel Alston.

The Titans (1-2) would tie the game late in the second quarter when David Turner bullied his way into the end zone.

Bassett would take a 10-7 lead with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Tyler Martin.

Hidden Valley would have one last chance to either tie or win the contest. However, the drive ended when Bassett's Paris Ragan picked off a Alan Castro pass with 1:20 left in the game and raced back 58-yards, The Bengals then ran out the clock to avoid the upset.

Bassett, who piled up 375 yards on offense, was led by Boo Williams. The versatile quarterback rushed for 123 yards on 30 carries and completed 5-of-14 passes for another 86 yards.

Hidden Valley, who posted 201 yards, was led by David Turner, who carried the ball 24 times for 104 yards. Quarterback Alan Castro completed 9-of-22 passes for 102 yards.

East Mont Blanks Craig County

NEW CASTLE, VA - Eastern Montgomery scored in every quarter in blanking Craig County 38-0 in a non-district encounter Friday evening.

The Mustangs (2-1) took an 8-0 lead in the opening quarter when Justin Fisher ran 28-yards on a blocked punt and Julian Stewart scored on the two-point conversion pass from Shawn Christian.

A 44-yard pass from Christian to Stephen Lilly and a another pass, this time a 29-yard strike to Chris East would make it 22-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Christian galloped for 53 yards for the score and then threw an 11-yard pass to Lilly in the fourth quarter to make the final 38-0.

Craig County fell to 0-2.

Salem Outlasts Wm. Byrd

VINTON, VA - Salem started a new winning streak Friday night, as they held on for a 24-21 non-district football victory against William Byrd.

After see their 35 regular-season win streak come to and last week, the Spartans (2-1), would take a 10-0 lead midway into the second quarter on a 77-yard scoring strike from Derrick Hickman to Donte Harvey and then a 28-yard field goal by Powell.

The Terriers (2-1) would pull to with three, 10-7, in the second quarter on a 6-yard scamper by Derrick Palmer. Daniel Dyer would up the Spartans lead to 17-7, when he scored from 2-yards out just before the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Salem would take a 24-7 lead early in the fourth quarter when Dyer ran 17-yards for the score.

However, the Terriers weren't ready to roll over and play dead yet. Palmer would score on a 1-yard run and a 7-yard scamper in the game's final 8:46. However, Salem was able to escape with the 24-21 victory.

Salem, who had 291 yards of offense, was led by quarterback Derrick Hickman, who threw for 132 yards on a 7-for-10 evening and rushed for another 54 yards on 11 carries.

Wm. Byrd, who piled up 261 yards, was also led by its quarterback. Derrick Palmer ran 159 yards on 36 carries and completed 6-of-11 passes for another 89 yards and scored all three of the Terriers touchdowns.

Brookville Beats Lord Botetourt In A Romp

DALEVILLE, VA - Brookville, who put an end to Salem's 35 regular-season win streak last week, recorded its second straight shutout over a Roanoke Valley team Friday night with a 35-0 victory against Lord Botetourt.

The Cavaliers (1-3), who played without 11 injured players, saw the Bees (4-0) take a 23-0 halftime lead and then score 12 unanswered points in the third quarter to earn the 35-0 win.

Justin Welch led Lord Botetourt with 79 yards on 11 carries.

Blacksburg Hands Liberty First Loss

BLACKSBURG, VA - Playing in what may be the last game at the old Bill Brown Stadium, Blacksburg came away with a 28-13 victory against previously unbeaten Liberty in a non-district encounter Friday evening.

The Bruins (3-0) took a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 25-yard pass from Trey Gresh to Casper Violette and a 7-yard pass to Ricky Sowers.

Another touchdown pass, this one an 8-yarder to Bryan Miller would make it 21-0 midway through the second quarter.

Liberty (2-1) would score late in the quarter on a 29-yard pass from Anthony Reynolds to Carlton Payne to make it 21-7 at the half.

A 7-yard run by Reynolds in the third quarter would pull the Minutemen to within eight, 21-13. That would be as close as they would come, as the Bruins tacked on a 35-yard touchdown gallop by David Bales in the fourth quarter to make the final 28-13.

Blacksburg piled up 311 yards of offense. Jon Jennings and David Bales finished with 106 yards and 100 yards, respectively. Trey Gresh completed 8-of-18 passes for 111 yards.

Giles Tops Narrows

NARROWS, VA - In a county battle between an 0-2 team and a 2-0 squad, Giles came away with an decisive 31-6 win against Narrows Friday night to record its first victory of the season Friday night.

The Spartans (1-2) took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a pair of 1-yard runs, one by Justin Gautier and the other by Cody Journell.

Giles would up its lead to 24-0 in the third quarter behind a Journell 22-yard field goal and 41-yard gallop by Travis Robertson.

The Green Wave (2-1) avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Cory Lowe to make it 24-6. The Spartans would add another touchdown in the final quarter when Journell scored from 12-yards out to make the final 31-6.

Narrows, who was held to just 134 yards of offense, was led by Jon Martin with 43 yards rushing on five carries. Cody Lowe completed 5-of-11 passes for 46 yards and ran for another 20 yards.

The Giles offense finally put it all together as they tallied 348 yards of offense. Cody Journell led the ground game with 96 yards on 13 carries. Justin Gautier had 77 yards and Matt Bane finished with 63 yards on 11 carries.

Pulaski County Rolls Over Franklin County

DUBLIN, VA - It was a joyous evening in Dublin Friday, not only did Pulaski County dedicates its field to the legendary Joel Hicks, their former coach, but they also went out an dominated Group AAA Franklin County for a 40-14 non-district football win Friday night.

A 25-yard jaunt by Nubian Peak, a 22-yard pass from Luke Watson to Peak and a 53-yard gallop by Jolly Martin gave the Cougars (3-0) a 21-0 lead. The Eagles (1-2) would make it 21-6 just before the half on a 30-yard pass from Aaron Corn to J.T. Edwards.

A 3-yard scamper by Peak and a 20-yard pass from Corn to Novia would make it 27-14 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars would get a 2-yard touchdown run by Martin and a 1-yard run by E.J. Dobbins to make the final 40-14.

Franklin County finished with 149 yards of offense, all through the air. Aaron Corn, a left-handed quarterback, completed 11of-19 passes for 149 yards.

Pulaski County piled up 437 yards of total offense. Nubian Peak led the way with 188 yards rushing on 23 carries, including three touchdowns, two by rushing.

Northside Tops Patrick Henry

ROANOKE, VA - Northside picked up its second straight win of the season with a 32-20 victory over non-district foe Patrick Henry Friday night.

The Vikings (2-2) took a 14-0 lead on a 48-yard pass from Ryan Keith to Andrew Mitchell and a 5-yard pass from Keith to Tyler Fisher.

The Partriots (0-3) would get on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 7-yard scamper by Darren Thomas to make it 14-6 at the half.

An 11-yard pass from Keith to Wardel Penn-Timity and a 50-yard run by Isaiah Martin would give Northside a 26-6 lead after three quarters of play.

The Patriots would come back early in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard pass from Thomas to Kyle Smith and 37-yard gallop by Thomas to pull to within six, 26-20. Northside would then add a 65-yard touchdown run by Dustin Phelps to make the final 32-20.

Patrick Henry, who was held to just 205 yards, was led by Darrin Thomas, who rushed for 166 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

Northside tallied 337 yards, in which 212 yards came on the ground. Dustin Phelps led the way with 105 yards on eight carries, including a touchdown. Ryan Keith completed 11-of-19 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Auburn Stops Galax

RINER, VA - Auburn picked up its first win of the season Friday night with a 21-6 victory over Galax in a non-district encounter.

The Eagles(1-1) would take a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter when Keifer Titus hauled in a 79-yard scoring strike from Derrick Duncan. The Maroon Tide (1-3) would pull to within one, 7-6, on a 16-yard scamper by Terrance Mazon to end the first quarter.

After a scoreless second quarter, Auburn would find the zone again in the third quarter. Duncan would call his own number and sneak the ball in from the 2-yard line to make it 14-6.

Duncan would once again connect with Titus in the final quarter, this time a 19-yard strike to make the final 21-6.

J.C. McPeak led the Auburn rushing game with 81 yards on 22 carries.

Glenvar Cruises By Rural Retreat

RURAL RETREAT, VA - Glenvar would score 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to turn a one point halftime lead to a 41-12 non-district win against Rural Retreat Friday night.

The Indians (1-3) would get on the board first with a 4-yard run by Hash. The Highlanders (2-0) would take a 7-6 lead in the second quarter on a 5-yard scamper by Zack Hill.

In the third quarter, Glenvar would use a safety, a 48-yard gallop by Hill, a 63-yard punt return by Kyle Horn and 32-yard run by Hill to take a 28-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 5-yard run by Rural Retreat's Field, along with a 76-yard kickoff return by Hill and a 32-yard touchdown interception by Gleason would make the final score 41-12, Glenvar.

Zach Hill led Glenvar with 110 yards rushing on six carries, including three touchdowns.

Floyd County Beats George Wythe In OT

WYTHEVILLE, VA - It took overtime to decide this one, but in the end, Floyd County kept its perfect record intact with a thrilling 40-39 non-district win over George Wythe.

With the game tied at 32-all after regulation, the Maroons (0-3) would strike first in the OT period when Jonathan Turpin bullied his way in from a yard out and Daniel Atwell converted the PAT to make it 39-32.

On the Buffaloes (3-0) chance in the OT period, quarterback Luke Harris scampered in from 2-yards out and then connected with Daniel Bradford on a two-point conversion pass to give Floyd County the exciting 40-39 win.

William Fleming Knocks Off Heritage

LYNCHBURG, VA - Wm. Fleming took to the road Friday night and returned with an easy 40-6 non-district football win against Heritage.

The Colonels improved to 4-0, while the Pioneers fell to 2-2.
