CHANTILLY, VA-- Normally when a team wins a big-time rivalry game, they are often crowned with having the ever-so important bragging rights. Yet in #6 Westfield's 32-7 victory over #3 Chantilly, they gained a little bit more than area bragging rights. They instead won over the entire area's respect and have seemingly put themselves in the immediate driver's seat to once again take the Concorde District and Northern Region championship.
In their win, Westfield moves to 4-0 on the year and they did it mainly behind the arm of Danny Fenyak and the legs of Jordan Anderson. Anderson, who rushed for 104 yards on the night, was the one who kick-started things for Westfield as on their second possession of the game, he helped his team march 50 yards downfield for their first touchdown. Following A.V. Lawless's extra point, the score was 7-0 Westfield with 1:12 left to go in the opening quarter of play.
Chantilly, meanwhile, would waste no time answering right back. On the ensuing kickoff, the Chargers put together a 70 yard scoring drive that was capped off by running back Kevin McGrath's 15 yard touchdown run. Following the extra point, the score was all knotted up at seven apiece with 10:13 left to play in the second quarter.
However, that's as close as Chantilly would get to Westfield the entire night. Despite forcing a three-and-out on their next defensive stand, they couldn't restrain Westfield for too long. Soon, the Charger defense would see Fenyak start to get hot. Throwing for several first downs to open up their next drive, he would find favorite target Zach Sargent in the endzone to once again give his team the lead at 14-7.
From that point on, it was all Westfield. Forcing a fumble on Chantilly's third play of the second half, Westfield would recover with excellent field position at the 18 yard line. It would only then take three plays for Fenyak to find the endzone as he found Anderson wide open in the flat, which further expanded Westfield's lead to 20-7.
With Chantilly finding themselves down two touchdowns, the Chargers would make a strategic move to attack the Westfield defense with the pass rather than continuously hand the ball off to their workhorse running back Torrian Pace. Coming into the game, Pace had run for 532 yards on 51 carries for seven touchdowns, and while managing to still eclipse over 100 yards rushing on the night, the Bulldog defense would have no part of the Chantilly passing attack.
In the third quarter alone, the Westfield defense would force three turnovers and a punt. The Bulldogs offense, meanwhile, would waste no time putting more points up on the scoreboard. On their next two possessions, they would find the back of the endzone, first with an Evan Winfrey 52 yard touchdown reception and then another Anderson touchdown run of 31 yards. With the scores from Winfrey and Anderson, they had put Westfield comfortably in the lead at 32-7 as the third quarter came to a close.
In the third quarter alone, Westfield had outscored Chantilly 18-0, but maybe more revealing is that the Bulldogs had outgained Chantilly 153-42 in total yards. When compared to Westfield's 149 first half yards, it's fairly safe to assume the Bulldog's third quarter output had successfully put them over the top in this affair.
With the loss, Chantilly will likely drop from the number three spot in the Power Poll while Westfield should move up significantly. Next up for the Chargers are the Herndon Hornets, who were victorious over Centreville this past week. As for Westfield, they will be playing host to the Robinson Rams.
