OAKTON, VA - The Oakton Cougars celebrated homecoming in style, with a convincing 42-3 victory over the Langley Saxons. The Cougars remained undefeated and continued to dominate on both offense and defense. The Saxons came into Friday night's contest with a 3-1 record, handily defeating Marshall last week 35-12.
After a couple of back a forth exchanges on offense the Cougars started the scoring with 2:27 left in the first quarter. After leading his team down the field with a balanced attack, quarterback Chris Coyer ran a sweep for a 33-yard rushing touchdown for a 7-0 lead. The Oakton defense continued to wreak havoc on opposing offenses forcing a three and out on the next possession behind the leadership of linebackers Jack Tyler and Joey McCallum. Coyer, on the first play from scrimmage after a Langley punt, found the endzone again rushing for a 72 yard touchdown giving Oakton a 14-0 lead to end the first quarter.
With sloppy field conditions from a steady rain, the Saxons could never develop a rhythm on either side of the ball. Langley's starting quarterback, Danny Pritchett, suffered a high ankle sprain last week and backup Patrick Kelly had his hands full against an aggressive defense. The Cougars took advantage and stopped Kelly's offense and marched down the field again scoring on a 26-yard rushing touchdown from Trey Watts, and Oakton led 21-0 with 3:31 remaining in the first half. Down 21 points the Saxons were not giving up. Langley intercepted a Ryan Harris pass and capitalized using the right foot of Farhan Khan to score a 45-yard field goal to end the first half down 21-3.
After the homecoming ceremony Oakton picked up where they left off scoring on their first drive. Meadows rushed for an 11-yard touchdown on a drive set up by a 17-yard pass from Coyer to wide receiver Derek Gleich. The Saxons blocked the extra point from Ray Goins and Oakton never looked back going up 27-3. With the Cougars defense not moving an inch, Coyer continued to find ways to score; connecting with Watts on a 32 yard touchdown reception to move to a 34-3 lead.
Oakton coach Joe Thompson facing rival Chantilly next week decided to pull most of his starters. Gleich was quick to capitalize on the extra playing time leading a drive down the field scoring on a six-yard rushing touchdown. After a botched extra point that actually turned into a two-point conversion, the Cougars ended the evening with a 42-3 victory.
