BLACKSBURG, VA- After thrilling football fans and earning several top honors last year in Northern Virginia, Stone Bridge product Jeron Gouveia-Winslow will have to wait another season to make his college debut, as Virginia Tech redshirted the freshman this year.

Gouveia-Winslow, who was named the Washington Post All-Met Defensive Player of the Year last season for the Bulldogs, was listed fourth on the Hokies depth chart at the rover position during preseason practices.

"He is a smart kid and he will be a contributor," said Jim Cavanaugh, Recruiting Coordinator and Strong Safety/Outside Linebackers coach for the Hokies.

In Virginia Tech's last scrimmage of the preseason, Gouveia-Winslow had 46 of the 48 plays. He had five tackles, one assist, one interception, one extra mile, two mental errors for 18 points

"Gouveia-Winslow is going to be a real good football player, he just needs to get stronger. He ran out of gas a bit today. But hell, when you go 46 out of 48 plays, it's hard to not run out of gas," Cavanaugh said after the scrimmage.

"Being a freshman, its kind of tough learning everything," said the former Liberty District Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. "Playing high school football was a lot more laid back than playing college ball. There are a lot more expectations, you have to be on point, because if you mess up it shows, unlike high school were you can make up for your mistakes."

When asked about his goals this season, Gouveia-Winslow said, "I want to learn the system, train hard by becoming bigger and faster. And, I want to prepare myself for when I do get a chance to play."

The former Group AAA All-State player also wanted to send the following message back home to his fans, friends and family, "I appreciate the support from home and GO SB."
