Westfield Has Two 2009 Prospects to Watch For

Just last year, Westfield was able to churn out one of the top quarterbacks in the entire nation in Mike Glennon. The 6-foot-6 quarterback was touted in many recruiting circles as a possible future NFL player, and after committing to N.C. State last summer, many then speculated he is the second-coming of Philip Rivers.

Yet Glennon isn't the only product coach Verbanic has produced lately. Eddie Royal, voted as the Virginia player of the year in 2003, was recently drafted by the Broncos in the early second round. Then there's Royal's teammate and Glennon's older brother, Sean Glennon, who will now be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for the third year in a row.

Of course, then there's the current college phenom in Evan Royster who is keeping all of Happy Valley, well, happy. The Penn State Nittany Lion is now their featured back and is just a sophomore. Yet not only is he slated to start, but he's expected to be a big contributor for Joe Paterno's squad.

So we turned to Westfield head coach Tom Verbanic to see what other prospects are being produced out of a school renown for producing DI talent. One player he mentioned in this 2009 class was all-Gameday offensive lineman Tyler Barfield. At 6-foot-2 and 290 pounds, Barfield definitely has the physical components to be considered a prospect.

"Barfield definitely is getting a lot of interest," said Verbanic.

One other player Verbanic mentioned who might get a serious look was Tyler Delph, a 6-foot-2 280-pound monster on the offensive line.

"He has a big body that could get a look," said Verbanic. "It's those two mainly."

To be exact, Barfield is getting interest from Virginia Tech, UVA, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse. While neither Barfield or Delph have received an offer up to this point, Verbanic likes what both bring to the table.

"They're both 285 pounds or a little better, and have good size while also bringing in some good experience with what we do on offense," said Verbanic.

After being asked about what 2010 prospects Verbanic has hiding in the cupboard, he admitted that it may be a long ways off before he'll know for sure who's college-ready.

"That's a real tough question," said Verbanic. "There's Dylan Doty, one of our running backs, but to call him a prospect, that's not the right thing to do now."

One player in the 2010 class for Westfield, though, who has drawn rave reviews so far is quarterback Danny Fenyak. Fenyak will be replacing Glennon behind center, and as of now, he has all the physical tools to become a Division I prospect. Standing at 6-foot-3 and already possessing a big-time arm, it may be a matter of time before college coaches start inquiring about Fenyak.
