Broad Run Crowned National Champions
(ASHBURN, VA)- Announced earlier today on Thursday, the Broad Run Spartans were declared national champions by USA Today. The move into the top spot came on the heels of Broad Run capturing their second straight state title by a score of 4-0 over Tunstall.
The Spartans had been previously ranked in the USA Today poll throughout the entire 2008 season, but it wasn't until today that they advanced into the number one spot. Just last week, Broad Run found themselves ranked second in the nation, behind only Aledo (Texas). Yet with their state title win and undefeated season, they leapfrogged over Aledo as well as Butler (North Carolina), who also finished the season undefeated and with a state title.
Led by Villanova-bound Caitlyn Delahaba, the Spartans finished a perfect 28-0. They outscored their opponents by a whopping 231-3, and did not allow an earned run all season long.
The USA Today poll is considered the most official ranking for teams nationally as it is sponsored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In compiling this ranking, factors such as strength of schedule, quality of competition in its state or league, and the quality of its players are considered. State representatives from across the country all have a say in the process.
Everyone here at the Gameday Headquarters would like to personally salute Broad Run on this outstanding achievement.
