Settle Shuts Down Vikings in 6-1 Win

CULPEPER, VA - It was the last game for the 2008 season and senior night for the Culpeper HS baseball team. And for the seniors their last home game was a sweet ending as they beat Loudoun Valley 6-1. Culpeper southpaw Brad Settle pitched six innings allowing only three hits while striking out nine Viking hitters to lead the Blue Devils. Cody Whitlock came in and pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

In the top of the 1st inning, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Andrew Creamer hit an RBI single scoring sophomore Alex Owens from 2nd base. That would be it for the Vikes. Creamer, Owens and starting pitcher Kevin Rinek would be the only ones to get a hit off of Settle.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Culpeper would put up four runs to take a 4-1 lead. They would add two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for the final margin. Designated hitter Brandon Mack (2-3, 2 runs scored), 3rd baseman Jeremy Brown (1-2, walk, 2 runs scored), and 1st baseman Hunter Kinney (1-2, double) would lead the Culpeper offense.

The Viking's record falls to 9-10 overall and 5-8 in the district. Their final game is on Friday at 6pm at Stonewall Jackson. The Cedar Run District playoffs begin next week.
