Chopivsky, Fletcher Help Raiders To 15-3 Win

LEESBURG, VA - Thursday evening the Lady Raiders' lacrosse team went head to head against the Park View Patriots. Starting off, it was anybody's game as possession of the ball alternated between the two teams and no goals were scored for the first seven minutes of the game. Finally, Park View grabbed the lead by scoring the first goal, but County's Maria Chopivsky quickly retaliated, tying up the score at 1-1. After their initial goal, the Lady Raiders established a substantial lead with three more goals scored by Kasey Fletcher, Katie Martin, and Molly Griffin, before the half was over.

Playing in goal for the Raiders was senior Holly Tyrrell, who had four saves. Together with Tyrrell on defense was Kaitlin Ireland, Kate Glennon, Jackie Causey and Jasmine Hughes. Hughes, who is strictly a defender, caused an uproar of excitement from fans last night when she forced a turnover and ran the ball clear down the field to unfamiliar offensive territory where she scored her first goal of the season. Hughes also completed three interceptions along with Margie Currier, Ginny Burke, Martin, and Chopivsky who each added an interception of their own. Ground ball pick-up was also in the Raiders' favor that game with a grand total of 47 pick-ups, a season high.

As the time decreased in the second half, the gap in the score increased. With the help of seven assists, made by Brooke Hewartson(2), Martin(2), Chopivksy(1), Sydney Hewartson(1), and Genvieve LeFranc(1), the Raiders managed to score 11 more goals.

Leading the scoring was Martin with four goals, totaling an astounding five goals that evening. Also contributing to second half goals was Burke(2), Megan Patlen(1), LeFranc(1), Christine Rihn(1), and Fletcher who scored a goal per half. Ending with the final score at 15-3, the Raiders proved that hard work in practice translates into well deserved victories.

Last night was the Raiders' last regular season game before they kick off their first district tournament game at home on Thursday, May 8. Come out and support the girls as seniors are recognized for their dedication to the team and departure from LCHS.
