Brocke, Spartans Close Out Season, Titans 8-1
STERLING, VA - The Broad Run Spartans closed out the Dulles District season with an 8-1 victory over the Dominion Titans in Titan Territory on Thursday evening.
The Spartans put the game away early by scoring 4 runs, all with 2 out, in the second inning against Titan starter, Ryan Skeffington. Kurt Reitzel got things started with a double, Shane Vlasic followed with a base hit, Adam Luhmann brought them both home with a single, and Andrew Mann drove in Luhmann.
The Spartans added additional runs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to close out the scoring. Dominion's only run came in the 4th inning when Steve Smucker singled, moved to third on a Bubba Noro hit, and scored on Skeffington's ground ball to second.
Skeffington worked 3 innings and gave up 5 runs on 7 hits. Matt Sherrill came on in relief and pitched 2 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, and Smucker closed out the game for the Titans yielding 1 run on 2 hits.
Trey Brocke went 6 innings for the win. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits and struck out 9. JP Devlin came on in the 7th and struck out the side to end the game. The Spartans, who are the Dulles District Champions, will host Freedom High School on Saturday in the District Quarter finals. The Titans will host either Heritage or Briar Woods on Saturday.
