Weaver, Bulldogs Go To (8-0) With 10-0 Win

RESTON, VA - With threatening clouds all day long, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs were wondering if they would get a chance to put their undefeated record on the line tonight against the South Lakes Seahawks in Reston. Head Coach Galvin Morris, his players and a core group of volunteers did an outstanding job getting the field ready for play as this was one of the few baseball game played in the Northern Region this evening. Sr righty Ty Weaver was on the mound for Sam Plank's Bulldogs and Paul Kirchner was on the hill for South Lakes.

Sr 2B Collin Pearson reached on an infield error. Jr RF Michael Prince popped out. Jr LF Johnny Bladel flew out. Sr SS Mike Stancik sliced a double, allowing Pearson to score all the way from first. Sr C Brian Wheaton flew out to end the inning. Noah Sweet led off for the Seahawks, hitting a sinking liner. Prince made a nice sliding catch in right for the out. Andrew Thomas-Calvo reached on a throwing error by Stancik. He then stole second. But Weaver made a great pick off play, going 1-4-5-6 for the second out. He then got Scott Reed to ground out to Sr 3B Tyler Basso to end the frame.

The Bulldogs had a great start to the second as Jr 1B Patrick Thompson boomed a triple. Unfortunately, Basso, Sr CF Matt Irwin and Jr DH Alec Whys all struck out with Thompson stranded at third. Kirchner drew a lead off walk. But John Baamonde hit into a textbook double play, Pearson to Stancik to Thompson. Weaver then struck out Kevin Ball to end the second.

Stone Bridge capitalized on several South Lakes miscues to put a 6 spot on the board. Pearson struck out. Prince was safe on an infield throwing error. He then moved to second on a passed ball. Bladel walked. Stancik was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Wheaton. He got a second life when the catcher couldn't handle a pop up behind the plate. Wheaton picked up an RBI as he drew a full count walk, scoring Prince. Thompson then singled, plating Bladel. After Basso struck out, Irwin hit a flare scoring both Stancik and courtesy runner Pat Piccolo. Whys singled, reloading the bases. Pearson came up for the second time, drawing a 4 pitch walk, plating Thompson. Prince then singled, scoring Irwin but Whys was thrown out at the plate trying to score as well. Will Sweet singled for the Seahawks. Tyler Siquerios grounded out to Pearson, moving Sweet to second. On a controversial call, Sweet was awarded third base on a balk. But Weaver bore down, getting a K on Wesley Casson and then getting Noah Sweet to ground out to Pearson.

Bladel led off the fourth with a single. He then stole second. Stancik grounded out, moving Bladel to third. Wheaton smoked a ball up the middle, but somehow Will Sweet (who came on in relief on Kirchner) got his glove on the ball deflecting it to Calvo who made the play.Thompson singled, plating Bladel. Basso singled, moving Thompson to third. Irwin hit into a fielder's choice, with Basso getting forced at second. In the bottom of the inning, Weaver struck out Calvo. Reed then singled. But a Stancik-Pearson-Thompson double play erased Reed to end the inning.

Fr PH J.J. White led off for the Bulldogs with a single. With Pearson at the plate, White was picked off first by the catcher Reed. Pearson singled. Prince hit into a fielder's choice, but everyone was safe as Will Sweet's throw to second was wide. Pearson and Prince then pulled a double steal. Bladel hit a sac fly, scoring Pearson. Stancik had a great at bat, spoiling several pitches before ripping a 3-2 pitch to deep center for his second double of the evening, scoring Prince. Wheaton flew out to end the frame. With Stone Bridge up by 10, Weaver was looking to finish this game early. Baamonde flew out to Prince. Ball was safe on a Basso throwing error. Will Sweet hit a grounder to Stancik, who had a second throwing error, and Ball moved to third. Weaver gritted his teeth and struck out both Siquerios and Casson to end the game.

Stone Bridge moves to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in Liberty district play. If the rains hold off, Stone Bridge is scheduled to play their final non-district game of the regular season tomorrow, April 5. They are scheduled to host Thomas Johnson (Frederick, MD) at 1:30PM.
