Vikings Run Streak to 5, Down W-L 10-5
PURCELLVILLE, VA - On what turned out to be a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, the Loudoun Valley Vikings baseball team won their fifth straight game by beating the Washington & Lee Generals 10-5 at Fireman's Field. The Vikes improve to 6-2 (3-1) on the season.
Junior Kevin Rinek started on the bump and pitched six innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out seven hitters to get the win.
Sophomore Beattie Southerland (2-4, 4 RBI's) delivered two key hits to lead the Viking offense. In the bottom of the 5h inning with two outs and the game tied at 4, the Vikes had the bases loaded when Southerland hit a bloop single to right field scoring two runs. In the top of the 6th inning, the Generals got a run back to cut the Viking lead to 6-5.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, with two outs and the game still in doubt, Southerland came up with runners on 2nd and 3rd base. With the count full, Southerland battled General's pitcher Tim Edwards by fouling off four straight pitches before delivering a double over the centerfielder's head scoring two more runs for a 10-5 Viking lead.
Junior Daniel Burke came in in relief in the 7th inning. He struck out the first batter but then gave up back to back singles and a walk to load the bases. Burke finally settled down by striking out the next hitter and getting a ground ball to end the game.
Senior Thomas Moxley had a great game at the plate going 3-4 with 3 runs scored. The Vikings play again at home on Tuesday, April 15th against Battlefield HS. Game time is 6pm at Purcellville's Fireman's Field..
