Reed Lifts Streaking Vikings Past Culpeper 3-1


PURCELLVILLE, VA - Coming off their big victory over Osbourn HS on Wednesday night, the Vikings continued their winnings ways by defeating the Culpeper County HS Blue Devils 3-1 at Fireman's Field. The Vikes have won their last four games and improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Cedar Run District.

Junior Adam Reed got the starting nod and pitched four strong innings allowing only one run on three hits. Junior TJ Daeschner came in the fifth inning and pitched three scoreless innings to record the save.

In the top of the 1st inning with one out, Blue Devil Brandon Scott would single and advance to 3rd base on Hunter Kinney's (3-3, double, walk) single to right field. Jeremy Brown hit a sacrifice fly to center field plating Scott for their only run of the game.

The Vikes would do all their scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning with back to back to back doubles. Blue Devil pitcher Jeremy Brown would start the inning off by plunking Viking junior Iain Mottice. Brown then struck out the next Viking hitter. With one out, junior catcher Wes Walker (2-3, double, RBI) hit a rope to center field for a double and Mottice would score all the way from 1st base. Sophomore Alex Owens (1-2, double, walk, RBI) followed suit and hit a double scoring Walker. Adam Reed (1-3, double, RBI) would finish if off by doubling in Walker for the third Viking run of the inning. Jeremy Brown would strike out the next two Viking hitters to end the inning. Brown would go the distance for the Blue Devils and despite getting the loss, he pitched well allowing only four hits and striking out nine Viking batters.

In the top of the 7th inning, the Blue Devils had a chance to tie the game. With two outs and down 3-1, senior 1st baseman Hunter Kinney would lace a single to the gap in right field. Jeremy Brown (2-2, double, walk, SF, RBI) then hit a double to put runners in scoring position. However, TJ Daeschner got the next hitter to ground out to 1st base to end the game.

The Vikings play again on Saturday, April 12th against Washington & Lee from the National District. Game time is 2pm.
