Olson Gives Wake Forest Verbal Commitment

ASHBURN, VA - In what is becoming an increasingly common trend this off-season, another Stone Bridge Bulldog football player has committed to a major college football program in the ACC. Rising senior linebacker Mike Olson (6'3..220lbs) received an offer from Wake Forest on Wednesday and he wasted no time in telling head coach Jim Grobe and staff that he was excited to be a Demon Deacon.

Olson was being recruited by Syracuse, Boston College, Virginia, N.C State, and Wake Forest, but heading to Winston Salem was his first choice. Head Coach Mickey Thompson said Olson was set to receive offers from several division 1A schools, but playing for Wake Forest was always his first choice.

"They offered him today and Mike was really excited because it is the school he really wanted to go play for," Thompson said. "There has been a lot of interest in him and I expected several more schools to offer in the near future, but he made his mind up that this was the place for him. We are all excited for Mike."

Olson becomes the second player this spring to commit to an ACC program. Fellow teammate Brian Slay (Defensive End) committed to play for N.C State in March. Stone Bridge will for sure send 4 players to major college football next spring with senior offensive lineman David Wang already committing to Virginia Tech last summer, and senior defensive end Zach Thompson receiving multiple offers from the biggest schools in the country.

Olson emerged last season to help lead a stingy Bulldog defense that became the foundation for Stone Bridge's magical run to their first state championship. He finished his junior season with 103 total tackles (71 first hit), 4 sacks, 4 caused fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and an interception return for a touchdown.

Olson's size had been a question mark, but the once 195lb linebacker has put on more muscle this off-season and now weighs in at 220lbs, the prototypical size of collegiate linebackers. With his playmaking ability and constant nose for the football, Olson will be one of the best linebackers in the state this fall.
