Barr's hit Leads Vikings To Comeback Win 2-1

PURCELLVILLE, VA - Tonight the Vikings displayed the characteristics of a classic Coach Wayne Todd team and that's good pitching and solid defense. Viking junior pitcher Kevin Rinek started the game and pitched 3.2 innings giving up only one run before handing the ball over to fellow junior Daniel Burke. Burke finished the game not allowing a run and recording his first win of the season. The defense played very well recording 17 putouts and 12 assists.

In the top of the 1st inning, Eagle centerfield Kurt Thiele and first baseman Russ Hill hit back to back doubles to take a 1-0 lead but that would be it for Liberty. Eagle sophomore pitcher Jimmy Bowman pitched masterfully holding the Vikes scoreless through six innings. In the bottom of the 7th inning, with one out, senior Kyle Rosel came in to pinch hit and coaxed a walk. He advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Up came sophomore shortstop Daniel Fleming. He hit a hard ground ball to the hole at shortstop and beat the throw for an infield single while Rosel raced around 3rd base to score the tying run. Junior Iain Mottice walked and up came sophomore Alexander Barr. He hit a fly ball to the outfield that dropped safely scoring Fleming for the winning run. The Vikings improve to 2-2 and 1-1 in district play. The Eagles drop to 0-2.

The Vikings play again at home on Wednesday, April 2nd against Wakefield HS. Game time is 6 p.m.
