Warriors Walk Past Spartans 11-10

HAMPTON, VA - In a match between defending Dulles District champions Broad Run, and the defending Metro Conference champions, Hampton Christian, the Warriors literally walked away with a 11-10 victory over the Spartans.

In the top of the first, the Spartans' Andrew Mann led off with a single and stole 2nd base on the next pitch. Mann then scored on an RBI single by Cole Shain, who also scored on back to back singles from Trey Brocke and JP Devlin, putting the Spartans up with an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the 2nd, the Spartans extended their lead when Jr. Patrick Murphy reached on a double and later scored on an RBI single from Jr. Chris Jessop. The Warriors came right back in their half of the 2nd inning, as Justin Woods and Nick Perry both scored on a double by Rudy Oredneck. Oredneck later scored on a single from Austin Bennett knotting the score 3-3.

In the top of the 3rd, Brocke hit his first ever varsity home run, sending the ball over deep right center (320), putting the Spartans back on top 4-3. Senior Kurt Reitzel scored in the 4th inning when Mann was hit by a pitch on a bases loaded situation giving the Spartans a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the 4th, Shain, Adam Luhmann, and Brocke scored on RBIs from Rietzel, Tommy Meier, and Mann, respectively, putting the Spartans up 8-3. The Warriors answered with 3 runs of their own with 2 outs as Austin Bennit and Chaz Dorman scored on an RBI double from Jake Cabe. Cabe would later score as the Spartans walked three straight Hampton batters, before getting the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, the first three Warriors reached on a walk. The Spartans were able to keep a run from scoring on the next hitter but gave up a grand slam to Sr Jake Cabe as Cabe launched the first pitch over the center field fence. The Warriors were now up 10-8.

In the top of the 7th the Spartans' Shain would score on an RBI single from Brocke. Brocke would then knot the game 10-10 on an RBI single from Reitzel.

In the bottom of the 7th, Hampton Christian's Bennet led of with a walk. The next batter, Dorman, struck out looking. The Spartans then intentionally walked Cabe and were able to force Pritzinger to ground out into a 5-3 fielder's choice. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, the Warriors Justin Woods laced a single into right center scoring the winning run. Although the Spartans out hit the Warriors 11 to 7, free passes would eventually doom the Spartans as Spartan pitchers walked 13 and hit 2 on the day.

The Spartans face Norfolk Christian on Tuesday.
