Delahaba K's 17 as Spartans Roll to 15-0 Win

ASHBURN, VA - Caitlyn Delahaba fired a no-hitter and struck out 17 of the 20 batters she faced, while Karla Powell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored as Broad Run (1-0, 1-0 Dulles District) downed host Briar Woods 15-0 in six innings Tuesday night.
Picking up right where she left off last season en route to earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors, Delahaba fanned the first six batters she faced before issuing a rare walk to Falcon sophomore Kate Fowler to start the third. Delahaba then struck out the next two hitters and got Falcon sophomore Holly Dominguez to ground out to end the frame.
Delahaba set down the next eight Falcons via strikeout before hitting Dominguez with two out in the sixth. Delahaba polished off the no-hitter with another strikeout to finish the game.
Briar Woods (1-1, 0-1 Dulles District), which started a combined eight freshmen and sophomores, kept the Spartans off the board in the first, but the visitors used a one-out single by Regan Doiron, a passed ball and a RBI-single by Judy Betz to plate a run in the second.
Broad Run exploded in the third, using six hits and three Falcon errors to score seven runs and open an 8-0 cushion. Powell had a two-run single and Doiron added a two-run double in the inning.
The Spartans tacked on six more runs in the fourth thanks in part to six walks, two passed balls and another error. Powell capped the evening with a two-out RBI double in the fifth.
Freshman Kristina Karagiorgis pitched well in relief for Briar Woods, allowing just one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. She struck out three and walked two.
