Lady Seahawks Swoop Down Over Bulldogs

ASHBURN, VA - The Gameday Radio Network's Girl's Basketball Game of the Week featured the Lady Bulldogs of Stone Bridge playing host to the South Lakes Seahawks. Both teams fought hard, but in the end, the Seahawks prevailed in what proved to be a historic night for South Lake's head coach Christy Scott.

The game started slow, with both offenses struggling to put the ball in the hoop. Sakai Williams of the Bulldogs put up 4 points during the quarter, and Lachelle Wallace put up 5 for the Seahawks, which helped them to an 8-6 lead after the first eight minutes. Offensively, the game started to pick up in the 2nd quarter. Jasmine Jones of the Seahawks and Alex Walcott of the Bulldogs began to light up the scoreboard, with Jones putting up 8 points in the quarter, and Walcott 9 of her own. The Bulldogs were able to outscore South Lakes 19-14 in the quarter, which gave them a 25-22 advantage going into the locker room after the 1st half.

The Bulldogs and Seahawks began trading punches in the third quarter, with neither team pulling too far ahead. However, a late 6-2 Seahawks run at the end of the quarter put them ahead 33-32 with just eight minutes to go.

The 4th quarter proved to be exciting. At the start, South Lakes was able to pull ahead by 7 points. But, two straight 3-pointers by the Bulldogs, including a bank shot from the corner by Walcott, brought the Bulldogs back to within 2. The teams traded blows once again, and with under a minute left in regulation, the Seahawks found themselves ahead 49-45. In a dramatic ending, Stone Bridge took possession of the ball with 10 seconds left, trailing by 4. Ashley Burris, who had two 3-pointers on the night already, took a shot from behind the arc on another attempt, and she was fouled. The crowd held it's breath as the shot seemed to hang in the air for hours. However, the potential 4-point play was eliminated when the shot clanked off the rim. Burris went on to miss all three foul shots, and the Seahawks walked with a 49-45 victory, marking the first time in coach Christy Scott's tenure as the coach of the Seahawks that she has beaten the Stone Bridge.

"This was definitely a major win. We definitely wanted to [finally] beat Stone Bridge, and due to our toughness, and our free throw shooting, we did just that," said an ecstatic coach Scott after the game.

This win puts the Seahawks at 8-5 on the season, 4-2 in district play. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, fall to 4-10 overall, and 1-6 in the Liberty district.

The Lady Seahawks will next play on January 23rd, hosting the Marshall Statesmen. The Bulldogs' next game is slated for January 25th, and they will play host to the W.T. Woodson Cavaliers.
