Westfield Blanks Centreville 33-0 - Finish 10-0
CENTREVILLE, VA - In a game that was touted as being probably the biggest test for the Westfield Bulldog offense on the season, it was the Bulldog defense that took center stage in Centreville Saturday night, blanking the homestanding Wildcats, 33-0, on Senior Night. The game was broadcast live, worldwide, on the Gameday Radio Network, and is available for rebroadcast for the remainder of the season.
That's not to say that the Bulldog offense wasn't effective, however. From their first play from scrimmage, Sr. QB Mike Glennon hit a streaking Johnny Pickett, down the sideline, for an 76 yard touchdown, and it was all Bulldogs from that point on. Westfield added a David Skahn 40 yard field goal in their next possesion, and that's when the defense started to flex their muscles. With Centreville deep in their own territory, and on 3rd and long, Wildcat QB David Toth was sacked in the end zone, but fumbled the ball, and Westfield LB Brian Kennedy was there for the recovery. The Bulldogs added another score late in the quarter on a Steven Tabot 6 yard touchdown run. The 1st quarter ended with the score 23-0.
Both teams found the going tough throughout the 2nd quarter, not being able to get into the end zone, but with time running out in the half, Skahn added his 2nd field goal of the night, this time from 25 yards out, sending the visiting team to the break, up 26-0
The 2nd half was much like the 2nd quarter. Both teams fighting for position. The Wildcat offense couldn't get anything going, as the Bulldogs would bend, but not break, on the Centreville running game, and totally shut down the air attack. The lone score in the half came mid-way through the 3rd quarter, and it was the Westfield defense strinking again. Brian Kennedy would add his 2nd score of the night, grabbing a tipped Toth pass out of the air, and raced to the goal line for the 30 yard touchdown, ending all scoring the rest of the way, and the night for the Wildcats.
Westfield finishes their regular season play with a perfect 10-0 record, and have the head of steam going into the play-offs. They will host South County in their 1st round game on Friday night. The Wildcats, ending regulation play with a 6-4 record, already qualified for the play-offs, their 1st appearance since 2004, and will travel to West Springfield for their 1st round match-up. Both games will be broadcast live on the Gameday Radio Network, beginning at 6:15 pm, with kick-off slated at 7:30.
