History Lesson: The Spartan, Patriot Rivalry

ASHBURN, VA - The anticipation of the Broad Run vs. Park View rivalry has reached an all time high with both teams being undefeated and needing a win Friday night to secure the top seed in the Group AA playoffs. Back and forth chatter between fans of both programs has been going on in the Gameday Nation message boards since before the season even started! All of this made me contemplate the history of the rivalry between these two teams so; I made a trip to the Broad Run library during lunch to take a look at every Broad Run yearbook. Flipping through the pages of Spartan sports history was really interesting, but not as much as Bruce Bornarth's senior year, black and white photo. Yes, Gameday's very own Bruce Bornarth is a Broad Run Alumnus, which may confuse some people because he is such a Park View "Homer". But in Bruce's defense, all of his children graduated from Park View.

After dissecting the results of every Broad Run football team in the past 30 years, I realized that in this 2007 season, the Spartans have achieved the best record in school history with a 9-0 record. The Spartans finished 8-2 in 1986, 1990 and in the 1991 season.

While the rivalry between the Patriots and the Spartans has always been intense, it has been quite lopsided. The Patriots and the Spartans first began playing each other in 1976, the year Park View opened, and the year Gameday's Andy Hayes was born. The first clash between the two teams turned into a blow-out with Broad Run shutting out the Patriots 49-0. At the time, both teams were playing in the Northwestern District. From 1976 to the present, the annual clash between the Patriots and Spartans has always been played at the end of the regular season.

Park View holds an impressive 26-5 record against the Spartans since this rivalry started back in the day. Friday's meeting between these two "Old School" rivals will mark the first time that both teams have entered the game undefeated. While the Patriots have won Loudoun County's only football state championship back in 1988, the Spartans have only made the playoffs twice prior to this season. However, when Broad Run hosts Park View on Friday, all of those attending may be witnessing a renewal and a new beginning to one of the most anticipated rivalry games every year.

Did You Know?
- The last time Park View lost to Broad Run was in 1991 which coincidentally was the last time the Spartans advanced to the post-season in football.

- Stone Bridge assistant athletic director Jerry Smith was the head coach at Broad Run High School in the 1990's and led the Spartans to some impressive seasons.

When Park View and Broad Run play on Friday night, it will mark the 32nd meeting between the two programs. While the Spartans have been on the short-end of most meetings with Park View, the overwhelming feeling from the Ashburn community is that this year's Spartans may be just the team to snap the 15 year losing streak to the Patriots. We'll be watching closely on Friday night as another chapter in this storied rivalry game will go down in the history books.
