Gameday Notebook - Week 13 (Loudoun)

STERLING, VA - The 2nd Season is now fully upon us, and as mentioned in earlier Notebooks, Loudoun County is well represented. With 4 teams in the hunt for post-season crowns, only 3 truly have a shot, as 2 of these teams, Broad Run and Park View, are in the same Region and Division, and squared off against each other this past Friday. Would there be a measure of revenge for the Patriots...?

Gameday Rewind...
For the 2nd time in 7 days, the Patriots rolled into Ashburn to take on the Spartans...this time to see who will advance in the AA Region II, Division 4 playoffs...and not to mention a chance at a little payback. The weather was chilly, but dry, this time around, and this game was as hard fought, and tight, as the last. The lead changed hands 5 times, with the last being for keeps, as Park View outlasted Broad Run, 16-12. In yet another feat of trickeration from the "Coach Hill Trick Playbook," Hill pulled out one that was the means to the end for the Spartans. Having seen the Spartans use a similar play last week to down the Patriots for the District title game, Park View's Eric Johnston took a pitch from QB CJ Leizear and sprinted right, only to pull up and throw a perfect strike to a streaking Leizear down the left side of the field for the 44 yard, go-ahead, and eventual game winning touchdown. Park View's Clayton Parker started the scoring on the night, with a 25 yard field goal in the 1st quarter. The Spartans went ahead in the 2nd, on a Cole Shain 1 yard touchdown plunge. The extra point failed, making the score 6-3. The Patriots answered before the half, on Johnston's 1 yard scoring run, and the teams went into the locker room, with Park View on top, 10-6. No team scored in the 3rd quarter, but it was a Chris Jessop to Adrian Fleming 23 yard connection that put the home team up 12-10, before the Johnston to Leizear connection sealed the deal for the Patriots. Park View will now travel to play the Sherando Warriors on Friday for the Regional title.

The Stone Bridge Bulldogs rolled through yet another opponent Friday night on their way to another AAA Northern Region, Division 5 title shot. This time it was the Marshall Statesmen, 49-29. The Bulldogs seemed to have matters well in hand by the 3rd quarter, when Ryan Moody ran the 2nd half opening kick-off 70 yards, making the score 35-0. But Marshall scored the next 3 touchdowns, narrowing the gap to 35-21. Stone Bridge answered back, however, adding 2 more scores by Moody (35 yard pass), and John Bladel (45 interception return). Craig Murphy of the Statesmen hauled in a 3 yard touchdown pass towards the end of the contest, but the outcome was already determined by then, and the Bulldogs advance to play the Edison Eagles this Friday afternoon, for the 3rd time in as many years, for the Regional title. The highlight in this game came from Jeron Gouveia, as he connected with QB Patrick Thompson on a 99 yard scoring toss and run.

The Briar Woods Falcons traveled to Winchester Friday night to take on the Millbrook Pioneers, in their 1st ever playoff appearance. This game was a rematch from earlier in the season, where the Falcons prevailed, at Millbrook, 40-14. The game on this night was a fast paced, high energy affair, with the Pioneers jumping ahead 14-0, in a span of 11 seconds in the 1st half. After a Butch Kaczmarzewski 2 yard run to cap a 9 play 60 yard drive, the Pioneers recovered the ensuing onside kick, and on then next play, Jr. QB Andrew Oates hit Levon Williams with a 45 yard scoring pass. Falcon QB Alex Munro answered right back, connecting on a 30 yard touchdown strike to Tim King. The Pioneers followed suit, however. On an apparent punt situation, Pioneer punter Wayne Seipel pulled up, and hit TJ Williams across the middle of the field, and he did the rest, scampering into the endzone, making the score 21-7. The Falcons put it together at that point, scoring the next 17 points on a Billy Mcdonald 4 yard run, Vince Atanasov's 26 yard field goal, and Jeremy Gray's 20 yard touchdown pass from Munro, putting Briar Woods up 24-21. But this was Millbrook's night. With the crowd in a frenzy, and with under 4:00 left to play, Oates found a wide open Neil Quince in the end zone from 10 yards out, putting them back in the lead, 27-24. With just under 2:00 left in the game, the Pioneer defense intercepted Munro, and they were able to kneel the rest of the way, and seal the victory. Millbrook will now travel to play Monticello for the AA Region II, Division 3 title. Even though the loss ends the season for the Falcons, our congratulations go to the program for their accomplishments, in such a short time.

Eric Johnston - Senior Running Back, Park View Patriots
Johnston led his Patriots over Broad Run Friday night, carrying the ball 19 times for 118 yards, and 1 touchdown. But it was his 44 yard scoring pass to teammate CJ Leizear, late in the game, that was the highlight on this night.

The Picks-Of-The-Week
Once again, a high school football coach comes in as a guest, and cleans our clocks!!! From this day, forward, we will not allow any more coaches to play our game! It's just getting too embarrassing! Sherando head coach Bill Hall hit on 11 out of 15 games last week, but it was in the Pro games...NOT the high school games...that he pulled away. It was Yours Truly who hit all 5 high school games right on the nose, and went on to go a respectable 9-15. Hayes slipped down one more rung on the ladder, going 8-15, and Bornarth was a measly 6-15... 'nuff said!

This week's Guest is Jason Bagby, 1991 graduate of Broad Run high school, member of the Spartan AA State champion baseball team of the same year, and part owner of , Diamond Sports Training in Sterling. We know he knows baseball...let's see how he does in football knowledge... Do you think you can beat the Crew in predicting the outcome of 5 games each from high school, college, and pro's, in our "Picks Of The Week?" Send us an email at Gamedaymagazine@AOL.com, and we will select one lucky guest each week. This week's Picks from the guys are.....
