Gameday Notebook - Week 10 (Loudoun)

STERLING, VA - It was another wet week for football, and all Loudoun County schools moved their games to this past Monday. One has to ask if post-poning to a school night is anti-climactic for the players. Based on some of the action on the night, a strong case can be made to the point. If nothing else, it certainly makes for a very short work week to get ready for this Friday's games!

Gameday Rewind...
Stone Bridge kept their hot streak going, and manhandled Thomas Jefferson, 49-0, in Ashburn. Patrick Thompson, back from a knee injury, threw for 175 yards, tossing touchdown passes to Matt Irwin, Ryan Moody (2), and Jeron Gouveia. Daniel Allen and Zach Kanicka each added touchdown runs, and John Ayres recovered a Colonial's fumble in the end zone.

The Broad Run Spartans stayed perfect on the season (8-0), after surviving a 16-6 victory over the Potomac Falls Panthers, in Sterling. This game was touted as being a potential slugfest, and it certainly was, as personal fouls would be the theme on this night. With all the scoring taking place in the 1st half, the Spartans struck first, on a Graham Allen field goal. Sr. QB Cole Shain accounted for all of the Spartan's touchdowns, running one from 2 yards out, and connecting with Kevin Sanderson on a 34 yard strike. The Panthers scored on a Chad McMichael 38 yard catch.

The Loudoun Valley Vikings traveled to Osborne for their Monday night contest, and lost another heartbreaker, 27-23, in Cedar Run action.

Don't Call It An Upset...
The Heritage Pride faithful certainly took umbrage to my comment on Gameday All Access this week, when I said they "upset" the Briar Woods Falcons on Monday's Senior Night in Leesburg, 28-21. After thinking about it, I concede the err in judgment. The teams were pretty evenly matched, with Heritage favoring momentum, having won 5 out of their last 6 games, losing only to Dulles District co-leader Broad Run in Week #5. The Falcons were coming off a disappointing loss to Park View last weekend. The Pride defense was the story on this night, as they scored twice in the 1st half, and stiffened late in the game to prevent a Falcon comeback. Michael Massey stripped Briar Woods QB Alex Munro on one play, and raced into the end zone, and the 2nd came on a Russell East 55 yard interception return. The Pride now sits at 6-2 overall (4-1 in the Dulles), and has a legitimate shot at reaching the AA Division 4 playoffs, if they can continue their recent success. For the Falcons, Munro threw touchdown passes to Tim King and Jeremy Gray, and TJ Bailey added a 2 yard plunge.

Homecoming "Hangover"...
The Park View Patriots traveled across Route 7 to take on the Dominion Titans for the latter's post-homecoming game. With all the homecoming week's celebrations, and Saturday night dance festivities, you have to wonder if the "hoopla" would still be in the air for this game. True...the crowd was unceremoniously thin for the home team, but the Titan football team didn't seem to care, and played the Patriots strong for 2 ½ quarters. But "Air Leizear" was on the runway, and awaiting take-off. After a relatively slow start, CJ Leizear heated up, and when it was all said and done, he had amassed a career high 447 yards in the air, with 6 touchdowns, leading the Patriot Air Force to a 49-21 victory. Dominion's Deandre Reaves kept his sizable lead over all Loudoun County rushers with a 214 yard night, and 2 touchdowns. The Patriots remained undefeated on the season.

A First For Everything...
And in this case, it's the 1st win for the Loudoun County Raiders, in their last 18 games! We've said all season that the Raiders were playing better and better every week, and all the hard work, and stick-to-it-ivness finally paid off, as they exploded for 43 points, in defeating the Freedom Eagles 43-27. QB Kelly Reimers threw 3 touchdowns, and added a 36 yard touchdown run to lead the Raiders.

Deandre Reaves - Freshman Wingback, Dominion Titans
Reaves rushed for 214 yards, on 28 carries, including 2 touchdown runs of 60 and 75 yards. He also set up the 3rd Titan touchdown on a 48 yard scamper.

The Picks-Of-The-Week
Last week's Challenger, Dominion QB Geoffrey McCowat, went 7-15 in last week's challenge, going 1 better than me, but that isn't saying much, as I was terrible last week...picking from my heart, instead of my head! Some upsets didn't help, either! Of the rest of the "Crew"... Hayes moves right back into the top spot (shared with me, of course!), hitting 9-15, while Bornarth went right back where he started...in the cellar... where his only "victory" was being as bad as I was, at 6-15!
