Chantilly Claims Group AAA Cheerleading Title

RICHMOND, VA - It was fierce competition Saturday in both the AA and the AAA competitions, both of which saw a Northern Region team take two medals, including the title in both competitions. In the end, we saw a coach grab a state title in his final year with the team, we saw one of the most impressive streaks in VHSL sports history broken, and we saw another team grab their second straight second place finish.

In the AA competition, the Brentsville Tigers took the title with a score of 271.5 in the final round. The Broad Run Spartans were able to grab second place for the second year in a row with a score of 267.5. The Tabb Tigers took third place with 265.5.

In the AAA competition, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs came in with a streak of three straight state titles. That streak came to end Saturday, with the Chantilly Chargers claiming first place, and Hickory claiming second with a score of 273.5. The Bulldogs secured third place with a score of 267.

As for the Chargers, this was a long awaited accomplishment for their head coach, Jim Kelly. Kelly was able to win the state title in what will be his last try, as he will be leaving the team after this year to move to California.

"My team was able to go out and get it. We came with the most expectations put on us, and the girls didn't falter. They nailed the routine both times, and I'm very proud of them. It's definitely a feeling of relief for everybody," said Kelly after the competition.
