Big Offensive Line Key To Broad Run's Success

ASHBURN, VA - For the first time in over a decade, the Broad Run Spartans are riding a 10-0 record and a Dulles District title into the AA Division 4 Region II playoffs. In just two years time, head coach Michael Burnett has taken a 1-9 team and turned them into a 10-0 AA powerhouse. What caused this change in fortune? In large part, the success is due to having one of the most talented offensive lines in the state.
This years Spartan offensive line includes Bryan Morrison (T), George Black (T), Jake Muth (G), Matt Escano (G), Shawn Lewis (C), and Robby Buckman (TE). This combination of boys has allowed for the offense to thrive under pressure. They have given quarterback Cole Shain the time needed to engineer some of the key game changing plays made this season. In 10 regular season games, Shain has only been sacked seven times.
Both the running and the passing game have also vastly improved over last season due to the effectiveness of the line. Running back Breon Earl made a name for himself last week with 29 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown. He also threw for one touchdown on a halfback option pass. All season long, defenses have tried different combinations to stop the Spartans without much luck.
"Most teams have moved extra players into the box and we still have been able to rush for over 2,300 yards on the season," said Burnett.
The passing game has also benefited from the stellar play by the offensive line. Broad Run has used a two quarterback system this year with Chris Jessop and Cole Shain alternating behind center.
There is no doubt that the sensational play of the offensive line will give the Spartans a chance to go far in the playoffs. This week, the Spartans will open up the post season at home in a rematch against #3 seed Park View. They will have to prove once again that they are clearly the best team in the Dulles District.
"The offensive line will continue to be a key to our success," said Burnett. "Our defense has given up less than 10 points a game, which means that if we are capable of controlling the ball and putting up a couple scores, we could be very successful. This is the best offensive line I have ever been associated with and believe they have the potential to take us far into the playoffs."
