Westfield Stays Perfect - Thumps WT Woodson
As Westfield head coach Tom Verbanic reminded his team yet again, before the start of Friday night's game, W.T.Woodson would be "the team to beat" in Game #6 of the season. However, the coaches and players would rather think of it as "Round 6," with high hopes of a 15 game season, were they to reach the State Finals. The Bulldogs proved themselves, and improved their record (5-0) with a 31-0 victory over the Cavaliers, who were previously 3-0 in the Liberty District.
The game began with Woodson winning the toss, taking its chances against the Westfield defense, and chose to recieve the ball. After rushing the ball up and down the field both ways, the Bulldogs got on the board first with a field goal by David Skahn. The game remained evenly matched until the Bulldogs made the next move, scoring on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Mike Glennon to Johnny Pickett with 8 minutes left in the half. The Glennon-Pickett combo hit again in the final seconds of the half, scoring on an easy pass from the 10-yard line, making the score 17-0. With the Bulldogs enjoying the comfortable lead at the half, both teams knew there was still plenty more football to play.
The majority of the 3rd quarter remained scoreless, again with both Woodson and Westfield working towards their respective end zones. Westfield then advanced on a touchdown-worthy run by Brian Kennedy, who was stopped short and tackled on the 6 for a 1st and goal with 2:30 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs took advantage of their field position and scored on a run by Steven Tabot, resulting in a 24-0 Westfield lead.
It was the same scenario in the 4th quarter; the teams battled back and forth with solid play, but no scores. Then, with 6 minutes left in the game, Westfield's Glennon connected with Ross Lavin for a touchdown pass from 20 yards out, making the score 31-0. With the game winding down to its final minutes, the Bulldog defense made one last attack as Tucker Karl made an interception catch. The Bulldogs would not score, however, and the final would stand, 31-0.
It's Homecoming week for the Bulldogs, as they will get ready to host the Fairfax.Rebels. It doesn't get any easier for the Cavaliers, as they will travel to play the undefeated Madison Warhawks. Both games are on Friday night, at 7:30.
