McAdow's TD Run Gives Spartans 17-10 Win

ASHBURN, VA - On the night where Broad Run's student section dressed in Pink to honor the Susan G. Komen foundation to fight breast cancer, the Spartans overcame a sluggish showing on offense to beat Heritage 17-10. The Pride came to play in the second week of the Dulles District schedule, and it was apparent on the first drive of the game when quarterback Kyle Nelson hit tailback Ross Madison on a 21 yard touchdown pass. Madison's score put the Pride up 7-0 and put some doubt in the minds of the Spartan faithful about how this game would turn out.
Before the worry set in, the Spartans answered back with a nice drive of their own, and Cole Shain put Broad Run on the board with a 2-yard run to tie the score 7-7. A Graham Allen 41 yard field goal then put Broad Run up 10-7 and the half ended with the Spartans feeling good about things again.
Heritage and Broad Run opened the second half trading possessions as both defenses started to dig their heels in. Heritage tied the score at 10-10 with a field goal late in the 3rd quarter and the game appeared headed for overtime after the first 10 minutes of the 4th quarter disappeared without a score from either team. However, overtime wasn't meant to be. Broad Run took possession of the ball in their own territory with less than 5 minutes to play, and after a several impressive runs, Kenny McAdow ran the ball into the end zone from 5 yards out to give the Spartans a 17-10 lead with less than a minute remaining.
Heritage tried to rally, but the game ended with the Spartans grabbing their second straight Dulles District win by less than 8 points. After the win, head coach Michael Burnett was encouraged about the way his players pulled together and more importantly, pulled out the win.
"Heritage is a really good football team," Burnett said. "We weren't quite ready for their athleticism and they were able to make plays and take some things away from us on offense. I'm just really impressed with the teams we have played so far in the Dulles District."
Broad Run struggled to get their offense moving all night long and Burnett mentioned that his team will need to be more consistent if it wants to finish atop the Dulles District at year's end.
"The last two weeks we just haven't been very consistent, and the better teams you play, the more you have to take care of the football in the red-zone," Burnett said. "When you win, every game gets to be a little more important."
With the win, the Spartans improved to 5-0 and remained tied for first place with Park View in the Dulles District standings. Heritage fell to 3-2 and is still very much in the Dulles District title race. Broad Run will travel to Dominion next Friday and Heritage will host Freedom.
