MANASSAS, VA - The Liberty Eagles improved to 2-0 in the Cedar Run District after defeating the Stonewall Jackson Raiders 26-0 Friday night in Manassas. Liberty's offense was firing on all cylinders, unofficially averaging over 9 yards per play. The Eagle D played extremely well and pitched their first shutout of the season.
Mark Simpson got the Eagles on the board first with a 44 yard touchdown run. Simpson continues to develop into a solid running back as he becomes more accustomed to the Eagle offense.
On the next drive Derrick Lee hauled in a 22 yard touchdown pass from Wayne Conner. Conner had another solid performance for the Eagles and is making a serious push for All-Gameday honors. Corey Lillard ran untouched for a 66 yard-score late in the second quarter that sent the Eagles into halftime up 20-0.
The Raiders were without Ryan Williams and Damien Thigpen as both players sat out with ankle injuries. Freshmen Tyrell Tapscott stepped in their absence but was unable to get much going on the ground against the stout Eagle run defense.
Stonewall Jackson lost their second straight game, after winning their first three games of the year. The Raiders travel to Loudoun Valley next Friday night and look to get back in the win column.
The Eagles found the end zone again late in the third quarter as Mark Simpson capped off a long sustained drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. Coach Buzzo's Eagles are on a three game winning streak and now stand at 3-2 overall.
The Eagles host Cedar Run foe Battlefield next Friday night at Kip Hull Field in Bealeton. This will be a great matchup, showcasing two of the top teams in the Cedar Run District.
Remember Eagle fans, Coach Tommy Buzzo and color commentator Miller Bennington tape the Eagles Nest live each and every Tuesday night at 7pm at The Locker Room in Warrenton.
