Glennon's 3TD's Lead Bulldogs Past Oakton

VIENNA, VA - The Oakton Cougars entered Saturday's game against the unbeaten Westfield Bulldogs feeling good about how they had turned their season around. Having won 5 of the last 6 games, Oakton was looking pull the upset of the state's top ranked team, but Westfield wouldn't have it. The Bulldogs took control of the game early in the 1st quarter when Brian Kennedy scampered 25 yards for the first touchdown of the game to make the score 7-0. Westfield scored again in the second quarter on a 15 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Glennon to receiver Johnny Pickett.
Despite several penalties and some sloppy play on offense, Oakton was very much in the game at the half with the score only 14-0 in the favor of Westfield.
In the second half, the Bulldogs added to their lead when Glennon found tight end Billy Samson on a 19 yard strike across the middle of the field. Samson's touchdown catch pushed the score to 21-0 and Westfield never looked back.
With 3:28 left in the 3rd quarter Westfield went to the bag of tricks and gave receiver Johnny Pickett another shot at throwing the football on a lateral pass from Glennon. Pickett showed his middle school quarterbacking skills off again by hitting Randy Johns for a 30 yard touchdown to increase the Bulldog lead to 28-0.
With 10:37 in the 4th quarter left on the clock, Glennon found senior David Kruchko for the game's final score on a 10 yard pass play. The Bulldogs impressively dismantled the Cougars for a 35-0 win to improve to 9-0 on the season, while Oakton fell to 5-4. After the game, Westfield Head Coach Tom Verbanic expressed his pleasure with the way his defense played.
"Our front seven tonight really got after it," Verbanic said. "Our kids really played hard tonight on defense and that was a big key to the win."
Westfield close out the regular season next Friday night when they travel to Centreville. Oakton will play Herndon in their last game of the regular season.
Game Notes:
Johnny Pickett's touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter to Randy Johns was the second touchdown Pickett has thrown this season from his receiver position. Pickett threw a touchdown on a similar lateral play against Robinson earlier in the year.
Westfield quarterback Mike Glennon threw 3 touchdown passes in the win, bringing his season total to 22....
