Gameday Notebook - Week 9 (Loudoun)

STERLING, VA - The end of the 2007 football regular season is rapidly approaching, meaning the "2nd Season" is right around the corner. That being, the playoffs! Historically, a clear-cut playoff bound team has been identified by now....but in the Dulles District, 3 teams could very well be headed towards a playoff berth....one champion.....3 teams! Park View, Broad Run, and Briar Woods are the front runners, with Heritage nipping at their heels. The Power Points system is a subject for a future diatribe, as space will not allow for it in this week's Notebook. So stay tuned.......

Gameday Rewind...

All Washed Out...
All games in Loudoun County, scheduled for Friday night, were moved to Saturday, due to the impending rain storms, including 3 Homecoming contests. A good decision by the AD's, as Saturday turned out to be a great day for football... with the weather, and the quality of games. The Heritage Pride celebrated their Homecoming by securing their 1st ever victory for the occasion, bouncing the Dominion Titans, 42-28. QB Kyle Nelson had a career day, chucking the rock 12-19 for 243 yards, and 4 TD's. Nelson connected 3 times to Sr. WR Darius Tibbs, and once to Jr. Ross Madison. Madison also added a rushing TD, as did Simie Goe. The Titan's Fr. WB Deandre Reaves got back on track in this game, handling the ball 29 times for 258 yards, going over the 1000 yard mark on the season, leading all Loudoun County rushers. Reaves scored all 4 of Dominion's TD's, including 2 impressive runs of 48 and 71 yards.

Homecoming Wake-Up Calls...
The Park View Patriots got a little scare on their big weekend. The Briar Woods Falcons marched into Patriot's Stadium on Saturday, and showed the home crowd that they were not intimidated, or impressed, by the Park View hype. On the 2nd play of the game, Jr. RB J.T. Bailey broke off a 72 yard TD run to put the Falcons up 7-0. From that point throughout the 1st half, the defenses for both sides would take over. Throw in quite a few mistakes and penalties for the remaining 22 minutes, and the score would remain the same at the break. Park View came out fired up to start the 2nd half, and would go on to shut out the Falcons, and win this one, 17-7. The top 2 quaterbacks in the County were showcased in this game, and C.J. Leizear would win this battle, besting Alex Munro. Leizear: 14-29-230, 2 TD's, 1 INT Munro: 11-25-149, 3 INT's.

The Loudoun County Raiders, still looking for their 1st victory, came to Ashburn Saturday to try and spoil the Broad Run Spartan's Homecoming, and it appeared, from the start, that the Raiders could possibly pull it off! With QB Kelly Reimers back from injury, he would guide his team to drawing 1st blood in the game, hitting teammate Jack Lewis on a 31 yard TD pass in the 1st quarter. The 2-point conversion failed, but the 6-0 lead stunned the usual rowdy Broad Run crowd. The Spartans fought back, getting a touchdown plunge from Sr. Billy Rocca, to tie the game in the 1st. Then before the half, Sr. QB Cole Shain would dive into the end zone to make the score 13-6 at the break. Loudoun County stalled in the 2nd half, collecting only a field goal by Troy Krepich in the 3rd quarter. Breon Earl and Chris Jessop added touchdown runs for the Spartans, and the happy Homecoming would be saved, 27-9.

"Give Me Liberty..."
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs all but secured their 3rd straight Liberty District title Saturday, by handily defeating the previously unbeaten Madison Warhawks, 27-7, in front of a raucous crowd in Ashburn. Jr. QB Patrick Thompson would go down with a knee injury in the game, but not before going 4-4 with 127 yards and 2 TD passes, both to Sr. Ryan Moody. In steps Jeron Gouviea, who filled in nicely in the QB role, to keep the Bulldog ship righted, and adding 2 rushing TD's of his own.

Vikings Let One Slip Away...
The Loudoun Valley Vikings were riding high in their Saturday Homecoming game against Culpeper. Sr. RB Jack Devine scored form 6 yards out in the Viking's 1st drive, and Sr. QB Cooper Barth would trot in another one in their 2nd drive. All would be good on this day. Or so it seemed... Culpeper would score touchdowns in each of the next 3 quarters, to go ahead in the 4th 21-14. Loudoun Valley had a little life left in them, however. Late in the 4th, the Vikings marched 75 yards, and with 39 seconds left in regulation, Devine would punch it in the end zone, and with the extra point, the score was tied, and the game was headed for overtime. Winning the coin toss, the Vikings chose to go on defense first, and Culpeper would get the ball on the Valley 10 yard line. 2 plays later, the Blue Devils scored, to go ahead 28-21. Now it was Valley's turn, from the same spot. But luck would not be with the Vikings, as they weren't able to convert, and dropping the heartbreaker.

An Eagle Unhappy Homecoming...
It was another disappointing day for the Freedom Eagles, as they hosted the Potomac Falls Panthers for their Homecoming weekend. The Panther's Chris Pelto hauled in 3 TD passes in the game, and Michael Baker added a 10 yard scoring run, to easily defeat the Eagles 29-7. The lone Eagle touchdown came late in the game, on a T.J. Mizzell 1 yard run.

Kyle Nelson - Sr. Quarterback, Heritage Pride
Nelson had a career day in his final Homecoming game for the Pride, passing for 266 yards, connecting on 12 out of 19 attempts, and 4 TD strikes.

Deandre Reaves - Fr. Wing Back, Dominion Titans
Reaves eclipsed the 1000 yard mark on the season, and was the only bright spot for the Titans in their loss to Heritage. Reaves carried the ball 29 times, for 258 yards, and scored all 4 touchdowns for his team, including impressive runs of 78 and 41 yards. Both of the 1000 and 258 yard totals are Titan single season and single game records.

The Picks-Of-The-Week
Last week's Challenger, Coach Jason Treon of Stone Bridge, thought he'd take a shot at the Gameday Crew on last week's picks, and emailed us for the challenge. He should have emailed in a pizza order, however, as he would have had more success, going only 7-15. Of the Crew... Hayes is starting to slip in the rankings, only going 10-15, while Bornarth starts to creep up a little, going 11-15. I, on the other hand, continue to distance myself from those 2, increasing my overall lead by going 12-15 on the weekend! (The season's total scores between the 3 Gameday Crew Members is located under their pictures)

Every week, the Gameday Crew of Andy Hayes, Bruce Bornarth, and Tom Whipple, go head-to-head against each other, and a weekly invited guest prognosticator, and we will pick apart the teams and schedules for high school, college, and the pro's, and come up with the Picks of The Week presented by GamedayMagazine.com. This week's challenger is Dominion Titan's Senior quarterback, Geoff McCowat. Let's see if he can continue the trend of players knowing more than coaches, when it comes to making predictions. So far the players are far outweighing the coaches in our "Guest" spots! This week's Picks from the guys are.....
