Gameday Notebook - Week 8 (Loudoun)

Gameday Rewind...
The season officially passed the halfway point this past weekend, and the top teams in the area dug in deeper in their foothold of their top spots, while others stayed their course in hopes of a chance to knock one off their perch. The Heritage Pride had no problems in their match-up with the Freedom Eagles, 33-17, behind the running of Ross Madison. Madison carried the ball 14 times for 131 yards, and 3 TD's, and added an interception, which set up his 3rd TD run on the night. The Pride moved to 2-1 in the Dulles District. The Stone Bridge Bulldogs continued to roll towards another Liberty District crown, trouncing the Langley Saxons 42-14. Mike Stancik, Kareem Alexander, and Jeron Gouveia each scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs, with Gouveia finding the end zone 4 times on the night. This victory sets up a big showdown this Friday in Ashburn against the undefeated Madison Warhawks.

In other Dulles District action... The Broad Run Spartans traveled to Sterling to play a banged up Dominion Titans team, and came away with the 34-17 victory. Cole Shain led the way for the Spartan offense, going 7-8 for 144 yards and 3 TD passes. The Spartan defense played a big role on the night, holding Fr. Deandre Reaves to only 58 yards rushing; only the 2nd time this season the freshman was held to under 100 yards. The Briar Woods Falcons had a happy homecoming night, handling their business against the Loudoun County Raiders, 49-14. Alex Munro had another solid night, going 15-18-171 and 3 TD tosses.

A "Tricky" Situation...
In a game that many said would be a hard fought, "smash-mouth" style football game, regardless of the records, the Park View Patriots traveled to Potomac Falls to defend their share of the Dulles District lead. The game was all that it was touted, as the Patriots found themselves behind in the score, late in the game, and needed a big play...and a little luck...to pull out the eventual victory. With 2 minutes to go in the game, down 14-13, and 70 yards to go to score, Coach Andy Hill dipped into his bag of tricks, once again. A skip lateral and subsequent toss and catch netted 25 yards, as the skip froze the defense into thinking it was an incomplete pass. On the next play, CJ Leizear found Ryan Pick alone in the end zone for the 40 yard TD catch. The 2 point conversion made the score 21-14. The Panthers roared right back, however, but bad luck would befall them. A Greg Woodlief to Chris Pelto completion all the way down to the Patriot 5 yard line would be called back on a penalty, and then Park View's Josh Jones would come away with an interception to seal the deal for the Patriots.

A Viking Effort...
The Loudoun Valley Vikings rolled over Stonewall Jackson Friday night, getting back on the winning track, behind the steady play of Sr. QB Cooper Barth. Although his numbers weren't gaudy, they were enough to propel his team to the decisive victory over a strong Raider team. Barth scored all 3 touchdowns for Loudoun Valley on the night, on 21 carries for 55 yards. He also added 7-15 passing for 64 yards. Sr. RB Jack Devine added 15 carries for 75 yards for the Vikings.

The Picks-Of-The-Week
Last week's Challenger, Mike Stancik, did fairly well against the Gameday Crew, edging out Hayes and Bornarth, going 11-15...He should have studied a little harder, though, as he fell one short of this expert! But if we were picking teams for an end-of-season match-up in the play-offs, I'll pick Mike for my team!

Every week, the Gameday Crew of Andy Hayes, Bruce Bornarth, and Tom Whipple, go head-to-head against each other, and a weekly invited guest prognosticator, and we will pick apart the teams and schedules for high school, college, and the pro's, and come up with the Picks of The Week presented by GamedayMagazine.com. This week's challenger is Stone Bridge assistant football coach Jason Treon, who emailed us to say he wants a shot at the "experts!" Well, remember the old saying, coach...."Be careful what you wish for..." See how he fares against the "The Crew." This week's Picks from the guys are.....
