Gameday Notebook: Northern Region Week 8

STERLING, VA - A huge upset, an unexpected blowout, and a crazy game were the headlines concerning Week 7. So now we have an unclear picture of what the Patriot District looks like, and we still don't know who the best in the Liberty is. In Division 6, the playoff picture continues to change on a rapid basis, and if there's one thing we're learning here, it's that the season isn't over until it's over. So enjoy this week's version of the notebook, because we know something crazy will happen in Week 8.

WHOOPS...
In last week's Northern Region notebook, we might have jumped a bit ahead of ourselves. We forgot about the unassuming world of high school football, and had already anointed West Springfield the Patriot District champs. Well boy what a difference a week makes. West Springfield was abruptly upset by South County while Lake Braddock put on a 41-0 shellacking of West Potomac. That completely shook up the district standings to the point where now Lake Braddock and West Springfield are tied for first. So we'll try this whole guessing game thing again: On Oct. 26th, the Patriot District will be decided between West Springfield and Lake Braddock. Trust us on this one.

REMEMBER US?
We gave a warning that the Cougars were coming, but guess what, we can finally say they're fully back. With a win over Centreville, the Cougars are now 4-3 and in the seventh spot in the playoffs. If Oakton can pull out a 6-4 record, they might be able to sneak into the playoffs and overcome their 0-2 start. And trust us when we say there is no team in the region who wants to face Oakton in the first round.

GAME OF THE YEAR?
So we know about all the hyped up teams who have distinguished records, but last week the Northern Region laid witness to perhaps the game of the year between Herndon and Yorktown. Both teams are rebuilding and could both badly use a win. Both offenses operate on a Wing-T offense that features talented players at the skill positions. Simply put, these teams are equal all across the board. And last week, they went back and forth before Yorktown punched in the go-ahead touchdown with a minute left. As luck would have it, Herndon ran back the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to put them ahead and give them the win to cause all-out bedlam in Herndon. The game is even airing on YouTube for the folks that missed it.

A LESSON IN BRUTALITY.....
Ever wanted to know what playing in the Concorde is like? Just ask Robinson, and they'll give you the best answer. In four consecutive weeks, they play Westfield, Centreville, Chantilly, and then Oakton. Earlier in the year, they played Lake Braddock, Stone Bridge, and West Springfield all in succession as well. If you ever want to see what a tough schedule looks like, take a look at Robinson's.
