Leizear's 6TD's Power Patriots To 49-21 Win
STERLING, VA - After a much-needed deluge of rainfall moved all of the varsity football games in Loudoun County to Monday night, the inter-Sterling contest between the Titans of Dominion High School and the Park View Patriots served as the high school version of Monday Night Football. This contest featured the top rusher in the Dulles District, Dominion Freshman Deandre Reaves, and the district's top passer in Park View Senior CJ Leizear. For Dominion High School, this contest also served as their 2007 Homecoming game, and senior football player Todd Lancaster was crowned Homecoming King shortly before kickoff.
The game opened with the Patriots kicking off to the Titans. After gaining two first downs, the Titans were forced to punt. The Patriots took over at their own 48-yard line, and would not take long to reach the end zone. On their first play from scrimmage, Leizear found Senior RB Eric Johnston on a short screen pass. Johnston picked up several key blocks from teammates and raced 52-yards for a touchdown.
Upon taking the field on the next possession, the Patriots appeared to have tightened up their defensive front, forcing a 3-and-Out from the Titans. The Titan punt was blocked by Senior DE Garrett Smith and caromed into the arms of Senior DT Thomas Mulabah at the 24-yard line. Mulabah headed straight for the end zone, quickly
increasing the Patriot lead to 14-0.
The Titans would not back off. After a Patriot turnover deep in Titan territory, the Titans began their first scoring drive of the game. A 26-yard pass completion from Senior QB Geoff McCowat to Junior TE Aaron Good moved the offense into Patriot territory, and a run by Reaves moved the ball to the Patriot 2-yard line. In what looked to be
a break for the Patriots, a fumble by the Titans proved fortuitous as Senior OL Drew Blaskoski recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. An extra-point by Tommy Kowalik cut the Patriot lead to 14-7 in the second quarter.
The Patriots would answer before half-time. On a drive that saw a clutch 4th and 4 catch by Ryan Pick, Leizear would connect with Sophomore WR Tommy Sedeski on a 35-yard scoring strike with only 27 seconds remaining in the quarter. Clayton Parker's extra point moved the Patriot lead to 21-7 at the intermission.
The second half started with a solid defensive effort by the Titans, forcing a Patriot fumble to stop the first drive of the third quarter. Dominion proved opportunistic as two plays later Reaves broke free and raced for a 59-yard touchdown run, once again moving the Titans within one score. Another Patriot fumble saw even more momentum
swing to the Titans, but the Patriot defense held.
Patriot QB CJ Leizear proceeded to move his team steadily down the field. On a nine-play, 75-yard drive, the Patriots scored on another Leizear to Johnston pass (14-yards). The Patriots would recover an onside kick, and on the ensuing play Leizear connected with Sedeski for a 43-yard score to move the score to 35-14. The Titans first
play from scrimmage saw a fumbled exchange, recovered by the Patriots' Senior DT Sonny Terrones. Three plays later, on a 3rd and Long, Leizear found Danny Foley who weaved his way through defenders for a 53-yard score. In the span of approximately one minute of playing time, the Patriots scored three touchdowns to move the lead to 42-14.
The fourth quarter would primarily feature a defensive stalemate. Reaves broke free for another long touchdown run (75-yards) and the Patriots saw Leizear and Sedeski connect once again for the final two scores of the game.
The Patriots used a balanced defensive attack led on defense by Eric Johnston (6 tackles, 3 TFL), Thomas Mulabah (7 tackles, 5 TFL), Garrett Smith (7 tackles, 2 TFL), Sonny Terrones (7 tackles, 1 sack), and David Revsbeck (9tackles). Offensively, CJ Leizear broke his previous passing records for a single game by throwing for 447 yards
and 6 touchdowns.
The Patriots host the Pride of Heritage High School on Friday, November 2nd. This will not only be Senior Night for the Patriots, but will feature two teams still in the hunt for the 2007 Dulles District Championship.
