Westfield Steamrolls Robinson On The Road

(This Game Recap Written By Jessica Lloyd, Our Bulldog Gameday Insider)
FAIRFAX, VA - After Westfield's win last week over the Chantilly Chargers, head coach Tom Verbanic warned his team about being ready to move on and compete against another Concorde District powerhouse, the Robinson Rams. This game was a whole world away from Chantilly, and the Bulldogs needed to be prepared for an entirely new situation. Robinson wouldn't have it any other way.
At the start of the game, the opposition was well matched. During Westfield's early possessions, the Bulldogs couldn't gain any points after the first few drives, including a touchdown pass brought back due to an offensive pass interference penalty, and a failed field goal attempt a few plays later. At the end of the first quarter, The Bulldogs finally set the pace for the game. After recovering a fumble near the Robinson end zone, Sr. QB Mike Glennon was able to break free for an easy touchdown run. The Rams responded quickly, however, striking back with a 20 yard touchdown run by Sr. Peter Ferrara, tying the game 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Rams brought the fans to their feet as Sr. Rafiq Qadir made a huge advance towards the end zone, but the team failed to turn out any points on the drive. With 5 minutes left before half time, the Bulldogs came alive. Mike Glennon connected with Johnny Pickett in the end zone, pulling Westfield ahead 14-7.
It was the Westfield fans who were then on their feet, ecstatic after an interception touchdown return by Sr. Kyle Goffredo with just under 4 minutes left in the half. With the score now 21-7, the Rams gave up another turnover, leading to another touchdown by the now infamous Glennon-Pickett pass combination. With the half winding down to the final minute, the Bulldogs weren't ready to quit. Recovering his own team's kickoff at about the 40 yard line was senior Tucker Karl, who had previously come out of the game due to an ankle injury. Westfield took advantage of the prime field positioning, scoring on a touchdown pass from Glennon to David Kruchko with half a minute left. As the teams filed to the locker rooms, the scoreboard read 35-7.
The 3rd quarter remained relatively solid, only highlighted by a field goal from senior David Skahn from near 20 yards out. Westfield managed to seal the win with a solid defense the rest of the game, with the 4th quarter remaining scoreless. The night ended with the final Westfield 35, Robinson 7. The win keeps the Bulldogs perfect, at 5-0, while the Rams dropped to 3-2, overall for both teams. Both teams are on the road next Friday. Robinson will look to rebound against Centreville, while Westfield travels to WT Woodson. Both games start at 7:30 pm.
