Metheny, Warriors Too Much For Judges 23-14

STEPHENS CITY, VA - With the entire town shut down for Friday's big football game featuring Sherando and Handley, the Warriors didn't disappoint. Sherando used its power running game and plenty of play action passing to down Handley 23-14.

On the first play of the game, Handley's J.J Dorsey hit receiver Andre Rickets on a 70 yard touchdown pass to put the Judges up 7-0. Rickets got behind the secondary and used his speed to quiet the Warrior crowd, and for the second straight week, the TCC Sports Game of the Week started with a touchdown on the first play of the game.

The Warriors answered with an impressive drive of their own, and tailback Markeith Brisco dove into the end zone from two yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Handley answered again with a Jeremiah Wilson touchdown run from 30 yards out and the Judges took a 14-7 lead in the late in the 1st quarter.

Both teams were playing impressively on offense, but Sherando's running game was working all night long, and Handley started to struggle in finding the big play as the game progressed. Sherando tied the game on a Ross Metheny touchdown pass to tight end Brian Barlow in the 2nd quarter, and the Warriors never trailed again.

The Warrior defense then came up with the deciding play in the game. With the Judges backed up inside their own 1-yard line, Dorsey scrambled and then was drilled deep in his own end zone. Dorsey attempted to throw the ball and it fell incomplete at the feet of his lineman. The officials huddled and decided it was intentional grounding and the Warriors were rewarded with 2 points on the scoreboard and the ball back.

In the second half, Metheny hit Derek Dehaney on a corner route to increase the Sherando lead to 23-14, and the Warrior defense held the Judges in check to secure the win.

Metheny, show finished with 2 touchdowns, was excited about his team's play.

"Handley is a very good football team and it was a huge win for us to propel us into the district," Metheny said. "I don't think you can explain the feeling in words, it's just awesome."

With the win, Sherando improved to 5-0 on the season and will travel to Central next Friday night. Handley drops to 1-3 in the loss.
