Gameday Notebook: Week 5 (Loudoun)

Gameday Rewind...
It was a "Bye" week for half of the Loudoun County football programs last week, and many used the time to work out the kinks, prior to Dulles District play this week. Coach Andy Hill of the Park View Patriots said during the "Patriot Report" (his weekly Coach's Show on Gamedaymagazine.com) that the extra practice time would be used to concentrate on "protecting" the football more...a concern over the amount of turnovers his team has experienced over the 1st three games. Others used the time to allow players to get healthy, while the rest worked towards finding a way to get back on the winning track.

Of the teams that did play last week, the Broad Run Spartans continued their undefeated roll by traveling to Brentsville, and thumped the Tigers, 39-6, behind the passing of Cole Shain (10-15-151), and the legs of "Big Money" Breon Earl (15-149). JR. QB Chris Jessop was used a lot more in this game, as well, and also accounted for a Spartan score, on a 3 yard plunge. The Spartan 1st team defense has not given up a point in 3 games so far this season.

The Freedom Eagles continue to try and find their way, as they hosted the King George Foxes. After scoring the games 1st touchdown (a 2 yard plunge by T.J. Mizzell), King George ran off 44 straight points, enroute to the 44-7 victory. Eagle RB Jeff Pugh also put in a good effort on the night.

It Ain't A Rivalry Until...
Pro tennis player Andy Roddick was asked once how he sizes up the "rivalry" between him and top player Roger Federer (at the time, Federer was the world's #1 player, while Roddick stood at #2). He was quick to correct the upstart reporter by stating that there is no rivalry between the two. "I would have to have beaten him at least couple times, and last I looked, I haven't been able to beat him!" There was another such "rivalry" last week in Ashburn, as the Loudoun Valley Vikings traveled to Stone Bridge Thursday in a much touted "Rivalry Game." Similar claims were made, as many in Ashburn were asking, "What rivalry!?! When was the last time Valley beat Stone Bridge." One would have to go a ways back to get that answer, and include this last game in that history, as the Bulldogs dismantled the Vikings, 49-7.

Battered Titans...
After starting the season with high hopes of contending for a Dulles District championship, the Dominion Titans find themselves with a 1-2 record, after their 2nd loss in as many games, falling to previously winless Tuscarora (MD), 40-20. The Titans entered the 2007 campaign with arguably their best crop of talent in the school's short history. But as players like Todd Lancaster and DeAndre Reaves continue to shine for the Sterling team, health on the defense has been one of the key factors in the 2 losses. Most, if not all, of the starting linebackers were out with injury in the Tuscarora game, and the inexperience showed against the hard pounding, fast, MD team. Reports from insiders is that one of the hard felt injuries is to Casave Easterling, a preseason pick to be a leader to the defense, who may be out for the season with a knee injury.

Reaves rushed for 178 yards, and 2 TD's against Tuscarora (MD), and continues to put up impressive numbers each game. In 3 games, Reaves has totalled 470 yards, and 5 TD's, and leads all Loudoun County RB's.

Cole Shain - Sr. QB, Broad Run
Shain tossed 2 TD passes on 12-18 passing, totalling 204 yards. All this while splitting time under center with Jr. QB Chris Jessop (5-8-75).

The Picks-Of-The-Week
The "Picks" weren't available at press time this week, but look for them to come back in full force next week! Actually, Bruce Bornarth needed more time to lick his wounds from the beating he took in Week #4..... In our first match-up last week, Andy Hayes got lucky, and edged me out, picking 11 correct outcomes to my 10. Sr. Broad Run QB Cole Shain was respectable, picking 7 correct games, while Bruce continues to prove to the world that he is the "Lee Corso" of the Gameday Radio crew, by only getting 5 correct picks!

* Do you think you can outdo the "Gameday Crew?" Send an email to Gamedaymagazine@AOL.com, and tell us you want to give it a shot! The Crew will pick one new guest "expert" each week.
