Trenton Hughes Signs Letter of Intent to Maryland
Gameday Magazine was at Kempsville as Trenton Hughes signed his letter ofintent to attend Maryland in September. Paul Phipps sat down with Trenton and his Dad just moments after the biggest moment of his life.
Gameday Magazine: So Trenton, how do you feel?
Trenton Hughes: I finally signed those papers. I felt very nervous. I've practiced all my life on my signature and I don't even think you can read what I wrote. I just thank God, my dad, my family, (Head ) Coach McGowen, and (Defensive Backs ) Coach Wilson who helped develop my skills. I'm very blessed; very happy right now.
GM: How did you decide on Maryland?
TH: I just love the feeling there. Ever since I went to their camp. Their defensive backs coach felt good about me, and it went from there. Last year they saw me, got my highlight tape, and gave me a shot. I've really blossomed since last year.
GM: You seem to have settled on Maryland for some time now. First choice?
TH: Definitely my first choice. Just the way the way went about recruiting me. It's the ACC, and only three hours away from home. It just felt like everything was right on point.
GM: How do you feel about Maryland?
TH: Maryland is on the rise, they won their bowl game. There is a strong support system there. (Maryland) Coach Friedgen knows what he is doing; he's very smart. They know how to win.
GM: Division I football is tough competition. How do you feel about the jump?
TH: I'm ready.
GM: What have they told you about playing time?
TH: I'm gonna come out and compete.
GM: When will you be a starter? What are your goals?
TH: My first year goal is to get a lot of playing time. Get on anything. Kick off team, punt team. In future years my goal is to be a top ACC corner. It's very exciting. I can't wipe the smile off my face.
