Stone Bridge Gets Its Bite Back in 13-3 Win
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs (3-2, 3-2) were back in the friendly confines tonight as they hosted the Woodson Cavaliers. Juniors were on the mound tonight; Joey Carleton for the Cavs and Tyler Basso for the Dawgs.
Neither team scored in the first. In the second, Martin Selgas led off with a double down the right field line. With one out, Bobby McCloud singled to left, plating Selgas. Basso retired the next two batters to end the inning. The Bulldogs got 4 hits and took advantage of some Cavalier miscues to plate six runs in the bottom of the frame. Jr RF Matt Irwin led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Soph LF Johnny Bladel hit a double to right scoring Irwin. Sr 1B Chris Martinez singled to left, scoring Bladel. Soph 3B Patrick Thompson was drilled by a Carleton pitch. Soph DH Bryce Williams reached on a throwing error, which scored Martinez. With one out, Jr SS Mike Stancik walked. With the bases juiced, Jr C Brian Wheaton singled to left, plating Thompson. Jr CF Jeron Gouveia reached on an error, which scored Williams. Irwin then hit a sac fly to left, bringing in Stancik who scored the sixth run of the inning.
Soph CF Max Waizenegger led off the third with a double. Jr SS Jacob Morley had an RBI groundout that scored Waizenegger. But in the bottom of the frame, Stone Bridge was able score four more runs. Martinez led off with a walk. Thompson bombed a double to the right center gap that scored Martinez. Williams was able to reach on a dropped third strike when the catcher's throw to first was off target. Thompson was able to score on the play. Jr 2B Collin Pearson walked. Stancik singled to left on a disputed foul line call. Wheaton hit a sac fly to left, scoring Williams. Later, Pearson was able to score on a passed ball.
Basso ran into a bit of wildness in the fourth, walking the first two batters he faced. McCloud singled to right, scoring one. But then Basso settled down getting a ground ball force out, and then got the pitcher's best friend, a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Although Bladel and Thompson both singled in the fourth, the Bulldogs couldn't bring either runner home.
Basso gave up back to back singles in the fifth with two outs, but Woodson was not able to get the clutch hit to score either runner. Stancik reached on an error to start the inning. He later stole second and scored on an Irwin double. Basso shut down the Cavs in the sixth. Martinez led off the sixth with a double to left, his second hit of the night. Thompson (3 for 3, 2 doubles) then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Thompson. With one out, Pearson lined a single to left, scoring Thompson. The game ended as the high school 10 run rule was enforced.
While Basso didn't have his best stuff tonight, he battled and got his second win in as many starts. The Bulldogs played error free baseball, while Pearson and Stancik are developing into quite a double play combination, turning two twin killings this evening.
