Familiar Spot: Panthers Claim Dulles District Title
Ashburn, VA - After Park View fell to Broad Run last night, the boys basketball teams of Potomac Falls and Heritage played in a one-game playoff for the regular season Dulles District Title, a number one seed in the district tournament, and an automatic bid in the Region II tournament. The two teams met at Briar Woods High School Saturday evening, and when the final horn sounded, the Panthers would come away with a victory 58-48.
The first half was tight the entire way, with the score being 12-11 Panthers at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would remain close. However, when the Panthers took the lead with 21-19 lead with 2:38 to go, the Panthers would never look back and would remain in the lead for the remainder of the game. The Panthers led 23-21 at the end of the first half.
Although the scoreboard may not have shown it, the Panthers would dominate in the second half. The final score was 58-48. Azhar Ahmed led the Panthers with 14 points on the evening. Ben Biber also played a big part in the Panther victory, hitting key foul shots at the end of the game to seal the victory.
"Our defense, our explosiveness at the end, and our ability to pull down the boards was definitely the key to our victory," an excited head coach Jeff Hawes said after the game.
The Dulles District tournament starts this Tuesday. The Panthers will play the Briar Woods Falcons, who did not win a game all season, going 0-22, and 0-14 in the district. Heritage earned the second seed, and they will host Dominion, who finished 6-16, and 4-10 in district play. Park View will host Freedom, and Broad Run will host Loudoun County.
